I have moved over 20 times in my life so I feel I am a pretty good source for reviewing this book.

Personally I did not learn anything but that is because I did not have this wonderful book as a reference, I had to learn it over the years the hard way, with many possession lost and costs incurred. If you have never moved, or only done it a couple times, GET THIS BOOK! It not only helps you organize and plan ahead, it will help you feel in control of your move, which believe me, is something you will value during this stressful time.

From page one you are taken step by step through the move, into the sale of a home or the vacating of a rental, all the way to your new house. My only complaint is a minor one, and that is that the language is not American. She doesn't use the word "movers" and it took me a while to realize that is what she is talking about, not some new kind of service. Also, she states that most movers charge by volume so notify them if you get rid of stuff after your estimate. Here in the US I have found they go by weight, not volume, which is a minor difference but just be aware of it. Lastly, a lot of the book may not apply to the average person since many of the things she suggests (hiring a professional home shower to decorate your house or rent furniture) the average person cannot afford. However, I still say it is a must have since you can always find a talented friend or do it yourself!

In today's market I do think there is room to sell your home yourself, if you do it the right way, whereas she maintains that a Realtor is the only way to go. But that is a matter of opinion and if you want to do it yourself you would need to read a whole other book on the subject anyway.

As a seasoned mover, I was impressed by how well thought-out and detailed each step of the moving process was in Jo Louise's book. I was expecting the book to focus solely on the details of the actual move, but it is truly an A to Z guide for everything from finding your next home to making sure you update your voter registration card. In the first chapter (Where Am I Moving To), she asks all the right questions and suggests ways to find the answers that are right for you in terms of choosing your next residence. The chapter on selling your current home offers a list of questions to help you evaluate realtors and an overview of how to look at your home as a prospective buyer might. There's a ton of information and ideas packed into each chapter - even how to sell your unwanted items on eBay or hold a garage sale - and it's all condensed into easy checklists.

As an American, it took me a moment to get used to the Australian lingo (e.g. removalist = movers, etc.), but overall I found this to be an easy read with a lot of valuable information. I would recommend it to anyone thinking about relocating, or as they say down under, moving house!

Jo has put together an amazingly comprehensive book on everything you must do to get ready for a move, the actually move, and then settling in after the move. She's included many different checklists so that you don't forget to do even the smallest job. It would be well worth it to keep this guide right beside you from the time you decide to move to long after you've settled into your new home. I'm absolutely sure it will save you thousands of times over in saved time, energy and effort - not to mention money. There'll be much less stress, less frustration and peace of mind in knowing that you've got everything covered. This book is a must read for those considering a move.

From moving overseas, to moving locally or state to state, I thought moving would never get easier. Moving Without Mayhem thankfully proved me wrong. I will be moving in the next 3 months, and I have already read this book twice, and refer to it with each step along the way. Thank you Jo Kent!

Jo Louise's book is filled with checklists and good tips. Written by an Australian, it might take a bit for an American to get used to the vocabulary (the one word that really stumped me was 'doona'). Having spent over 20 years preparing estimates and providing 'guaranteed pricing' proposals in the moving business (she calls us 'removalists' in this book) I am totally in agreement that the biggest cause of unsatisfactory moves in failure to plan and execute to plan. Related issues: customers who expect their removalist to read minds and know what his/her client wants; expecting their removalist to plan and execute for them; and withholding critical information. (I have had customers moving deep into woods on unpaved dirt roads who thought their move would be 'cheaper' if they didn't mention it. They hadn't read their agreement and hadn't considered the fact that a 52-foot semi trailer simply could not get to the destination house).

This book does not get into the process of price negotiation, guaranteed versus non-guaranteed pricing, types of 'mover's insurance' (a misnomer) available from the removalist, and other topics that might be of interest to an American. One thing also not mentioned is the *critical importance* of completely reading both proposals and contracts. One of the biggest causes of major problems between a removalist and a client is a customer thinking they bought/paid for an item that is simply not included in the proposal!

I think "Moving Without Mayhem" fills a void and I hope the author in subsequent editions will expand on the topics I've mentioned. As it is, it will help immeasurably in assuring a minimum of heartache and moving to a new house stress free! Well worth reading!
