This lavalier mic is intended to be used with iPhone, iPod, iPad and certain other Android or Windows smartphones that use a TRRS plug. I used it with my iPhone5s but have also been able to use it with my Olympus Digital Voice recorder as well as my Canon Vixia HF-R50 camcorder. I'm not endorsing the use of this with digital voice recorders, I'm just saying that it does work with mine.
This is excellent for recording personal memos or for use in interviews because it is omni-directional. When used for interviews, even though I clip this on my shirt, I find that it picks up the other person quite well.
The sound quality is very good... surprisingly good for such a low priced lavalier microphone.
The cable length is 4' which I find a little short. I'd prefer at least a 6' cable myself. But depending on your use of this, 4' might be sufficient. For instance, for use with my digital voice recorder and iPhone5s, 4' is OK.
It comes with two microphone clips, two foam windscreens and a small vinyl storage pouch with drawstring closure.
I have used it for a few outside interviews where there were trucks driving by and I could still get my intended interviewee by using this microphone. I would check your volume when recording, this microphone could allow you to blow out your audio in your recording if you are used to always recording with the iPad on high volume. It seemed to have best results on medium volume.
My video shows me testing the audio of the microphone versus the built in mic on an iPad Air 2 and Apple ear bud headphones with a built in mic. This may help others make a choice if they want to purchase one or not.
The Lav Mics in this review are the Movo PM10 (This product) and:
Miracle Sound Deluxe Lavalier Lapel Clip-on Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone for Apple Iphone, Ipad, Ipod Touch, Samsung Android and Windows Smartphones
Stony-Edge SIMPLE LAV- MOBILE Condenser Lavalier/Lapel Microphone for iPhone & Android Smartphones
All three mics are omnidirectional and that’s just perfect for interviews, YouTube videos, Podcasts, etc. Omnidirectional means the mic will pick up sound equally from all directions. So if you only have one mic and want to record two people, you could set the mic between you and your subject to get a good recording. It also means you don’t have to worry about how you place the mic or if it moves a little during recording as those things just won’t affect the recording.
These are 4-Pole mics, with 3.5mm (1/8”) plugs, meaning they are made to work with all current Smartphones and Tablets on the market today but need an adapter to use on your computer or DSLR camera.
These mics currently sell for between $18 and $40 on Amazon.
I recorded the audio for this video using an iPhone 4s and Adobe Audition.
The Stoney-Edge was about 6db lower in volume (placed in the same location as the other two), so I did raise the volume on that track which introduced some clipping, but the original audio has no clipping. Just note that the Stoney Edge lav mic isn’t as sensitive as the others, which may be a good thing, because I had to place the others a good distance from my mouth and speak more quietly than normal in order to get rid of most of the clipping.
If you use these inexpensive lav mics as they’re intended, you probably won’t be able to tell the difference between these and mics that cost a few hundred dollars. These mics aren’t for recording vocals for an album in a studio, rather they are for interviews and talking head videos and when used for those purposes, they will perform admirably.
There isn't one clear winner because all of the mics have at least one thing that sets them apart from the others and all are very good quality, so you must choose based on the features and price instead.
Here’s my breakdown, though:
The MiracleSound Mic is the cheapest of the three, but has an all metal lapel clip with no plastic and also comes with a decent cord length, so it is the overall winner, in my opinion.
If cost is no object, I’d pick the Stoney-Edge because of its 8’ cable and built in cable management.
Since the Movo PM10 is more expensive than the MiracleSound, has parts made of plastic, and doesn’t have any distinguishing features, I’m afraid I cannot recommend it.
I hope this review and video is able to help you determine which lav mic you’ll purchase next.
