Never heard the Brahms that I can recall and when I heard it I immediately tried to identify it and then find a recording of it that I would own. Have listened three times now and really feel it's a wonderful thing to own, discover for first time or recall from the past. Didn't have any performance to compare it with but these guys perform an exquisite rendering of this musically complex piece. It's quite satisfying. As for the Mozart, well it soars as well. Great pairing and great listening.

I was happy to get these 2 works together. I wanted them especially for the clarinet parts. The clarinet shines in both, but the styles of the 2 pieces from different centuries is clearly apparent: An interesting contrast and interesting to hear how different the clarinet sounds in each. I would recommend especially if you like Mozart and Brahms.

Brahms Clarinet Quintet is one of his most emotionally engaging works. The slow movement is almost Italian in its intensity-- certain moments even seem to anticipate "Tosca," so much so that I imagine Puccini must have studied the earlier work. This is music to study, to savor, and then-- and only then-- to finally let into your soul. The Emersons have clearly done much of the work for us. Thank you!

This interpretation of the Brahms as well as the Mozart clarinet quintet is rushed and irritatingly so. I have been listening to it over and over as I come to dislike it more and more. For me, these two works should be lyrical and meaningfully rendered. I have two other versions of the Mozart quintet which touch me with their lyricism. The clarinetist on this CD is clearly quite remarkable, but his playing, while impressive, is not satisfying. What is interesting is to compare the playing time of each movement on this Cd with the playing times of each on other CDs.

wonderful renditions of two great masterpieces of chamber music

Shifrin and the Emerson Quartet demonstrated an outstanding artistic interpretation of both the Mozart and Brahms quintets. The ensemble performance is unified and expressive. The technical quality of the recording also is excellent. After hearing the CD, I purchased a copy for each member of my own quintet. Highest compliments are due to these players.

The Mozart is fantastic and I love this rendition. The Brahms will take me longer...perhaps I will learn to love it too.

Two key works played and recorded to a high level of satisfaction and well worth considering for purchase
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on November 28, 2012
This well recorded disc from 1996-7 and published in 1999 provides a relatively unusual but very useful coupling for the Mozart Clarinet Quintet which is often coupled with Mozart's clarinet concerto or a similar period piece.
Nevertheless this coupling makes sense in so far as it couples together two of the great works for this combination.
The Emerson Quartet enjoys a considerable following as it can be relied upon to produce accurate playing with good tuning and with good control of string tone without any sense of edginess. As such they comfortably belong to the elite of quartets and their respective technical and musical skills are a great asset when provided a fine accompaniment for David Shifrin on the solo clarinet.
David Shifrin is considered to be one of the leading solo clarinettists and this combination is totally successful. The style is appropriate to the music and the pace is kept at sensibly moderate speeds in both works thus avoiding extremes of tempo in either direction. The Mozart is played with an awareness of period style in terms of pace but clearly with a modern approach to tone and expression.
The consideration of pace is particularly important in the case of the Brahms late quintet. This quintet can be afflicted with unduly slow tempi by some performers presumably mistakenly intending to create the autumnal feeling often associated with the very last few works of the composer including this one. However, Brahms may have been getting on in years but that is no reason for unduly slow speeds which rob the work of essential vitality and structure. This is not a work that benefits from slow tempo and in this case things are kept moving sufficiently so what we have here is an example of a mature composition played with sensitivity but without indulgence.
I would therefore suggest that this very attractive coupling of two major works from the clarinet chamber repertoire is well served by these recordings and that the disc is therefore well worth considering as a good purchase option

Zwei Juwelen der Kammermusik in überzeugender Interpretation
Reviewed in Germany 🇩🇪 on November 29, 2012

Reviewed in Germany 🇩🇪 on January 28, 2014

Such beautiful, uplifting music. Emerson Quartet play ensemble music at it's finest. This is a relaxing, mood lifting CD with two very distinct flavours...sweet Classic Mozart, and utterly Romantic Brahms.
