Editorial Reviews

One way to measure Mozart's greatness is to listen to his overtures as entities apart from the operas they precede. Andrea Marcon and his terrific ensemble, La Cetra, approach Mozart à la Baroque - vigorously, colorfully, and with acute awareness of the sound world the composer was born into but changed forever . These overtures are gems of melodic inspiration, ingenious orchestration, and sheer zest that stand on their own. However, as the creative kernels of the works that follow them, they will make listeners want to revisit the operas they know and to acquire the rarer operas they have yet to discover. Andrea Marcon has appeared as conductor on a number of other DG recordings, most notably in collaboration with soprano Patricia Petibon, Giuliano Carmignola and others.

Nowadays, DG new-releases are few and far between and largely inconsequential. Those artists who are beneficiaries of such a windfall need to be photogenic in the very least - Big Jim Levine, I will show you fear in a handful of Big Macs!

Here we have the unusual situation where a 2011 new release from Hamburg has yet to be reviewed on Amazon. Andrea Marcon looks like the archetypal, funky barista with a five day growth (cross, not tick). What little commentary this disc has generated on the internet is minatory: "Marcon bring a baroque approach to Mozart's overtures." Fear and loathing were mine when I read this. Clipped Phrase City - here I come. Not that it particular matters, but the selection of overtures is generous: Il Sogno di Scipione, La Finta Giardiniera and Lo Sposo Deluso are missing and that's about it.

My reservations notwithstanding - and no, Bacchus was not at hand to steel my resolve - I enjoyed this disc and surprisingly so. Sure, the usual mannerisms are in play: a string section which bears resemblance to a two-stroke engine; vibrato is exilic - and joy of joys: clipped phrasing is not absent from proceedings. Even so, I was swept up in the vibrancy of the music-making. Each overture is despatched fierily and with immense élan. For once, charm is invited to the dance - Marcon's performance of Il Re Pastore bears testimony to that.

The concert ending to the overture from Don Giovanni is hokum: that's one of the few criticisms I can make of this disc. The recording is superlative.

So where does it sit in the scheme of things? Hans Vonk and the Dresden Staatskapelle still command the field of battle (
