Editorial Reviews

Robert Levin is a daring fellow. Instead of playing Mozart's cadenzas, he improvises his own. And he improvises elsewhere, filling in with the orchestra when no piano part is written and frequently decorating Mozart's text. His object in doing all of this is to bring us closer to Mozart's time, when a pianist would have done these things automatically (as we know Mozart himself did). Even more importantly, he brings the music to life with his alert playing, catching the spirit of each movement. Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music provide strong collaboration, and you can hear every one of those tasty lines Mozart wrote into the orchestral parts. --Leslie Gerber

What can I say? Mozart was incredible. As Haydn said, he understood rhythm better than anybody else and he had better taste in music than anybody else. I like hearing his music played with the instruments for which he wrote, especially the fortepiano played by the great Robert Levin and authentic instruments (or copies) used by the Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) who are conducted by Christopher Hogwood, this CD is worth far more than the five stars that I have given CDs of music written by lesser composers (Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Liszt, Grieg, Vivaldi, et al) and played by inferior orchestras. I would have to give it about 6 1/2 stars.
