These definitely serve a purpose, but they're not good for everything. Some cleaning jobs really rip them apart. For instance cleaning caked-on grease off an old pan or pot - the Magic Eraser will crumble apart long before your pan gets clean.
I also find that when they're about 60%-70% used, they get very dirty and begin to fall apart so easily that you really end up thinking twice before using that last 30%. Dirt and grease stick to them so it's not long before they turn black and nasty, and you really don't want them laying around where anyone can see them. You probably won't even want to see them! So I find the constant need to shove them into a cabinet somewhere, only to later forget where they are!
If you're planning on using one to clean a dirty stove top - just plan on that being your last use for that sponge. They do a decent job on a greasy stove top - but you really won't want to use them on anything else after you're done.
THEIR PLACE: The best use I've found for these is on light cleaning jobs, like scrubbing the kitchen sink after grease and soap scum begin to build up. They are excellent on that job! They are great substitutes for dry-powder cleaners like Comet and Ajax. I find that I now automatically reach for these in those situations where I would have used Comet in the past. With these you just wipe around the sink and you're done. With Comet, you have to sprinkle it on, scrub with a wet sponge, then you have to spend a lot of time rinsing. But with these - just a few seconds to rinse because there's no soap to remove. These are great for those times when you don't want to mess around with soap. Cleaning painted walls is another great use. No soapy mess on the walls. But if you're at the last 30% of a Magic Eraser, they will leave a terrible crumbly mess of little grey and black pieces all over the wall. You have to take a wet paper towel afterwards to wipe the "crumbs" off. Then a dry towel to dry the wall. These are best on walls when they're new and fresh.
SCRATCHING: I thought I had read somewhere that these won't scratch anything. But they actually did scratch my wood-laminate cabinet doors in the kitchen. In one place the wood now has a noticeably lighter spot, where I had rubbed a little harder to get off a piece of grease. The grease is gone but so is some of the color of the fake wood. I also noticed after that, that even in the places where I had rubbed the cabinet doors very lightly, these left tiny little hairline scratches. No one can see them but me, because I know they're there. But they are there nonetheless.
Overall, once learning the pros and cons - I love these for the things they're good at. And I will continue to use them. Just be careful on wooden and porous surfaces.
Oh and by the way - in case anybody's interested, a box of 8 lasted about 9 months with light weekly use.

I have been curious about these "magic eraser" sponges and decided to give them a try. I bought this 8-pack (I will refer to it as national brand), along with a 40-pack which I will refer to it as a private label, and a generic 100 pack. I have been using all of them for about a week around the house and am very happy about how they are working out. I see clearly why they are being called "erasers" when I use them to rub against the greasy buildups around the exhaust hood cover. I use them to wipe off the counter tops, the stainless steel oven doors, fridge doors, stairway banisters, door frames, bathroom walls. Once I accidentally rubbed the sponge against a rusty pipe and was surprised what it took off. No, the pipe did not return to its shinny state, but did made me want to run a broken sponge around hidden areas one last time before throwing them away.I tried using these to clean up the coffee stain buildups inside the coffee cup. It didn't work for me. But that's OK. I can still reach for the baking soda (and other cleaning tools for that matter).Likewise, among the 3 different brands of the magic erasers, I do not have to limit myself to use only one. You do get what you pay for, but to some extent prices do matter. The thicker (and more expensive) ones are great for the tougher jobs, but there are plenty jobs can be done easily with the thinner ones.The prices that I paid for each are shown in the pictures.
