Top customer reviews
So, knowing it was going to be another Mr. Coffee Coffeemaker for me, I started researching various coffeemakers on Amazon and other sites (several other brands included). This Mr. Coffee CG12 came close to what I had; not too fancy and it's white which is what I wanted in my new kitchen. It was a good price for my needs.
You do have to remember to push the spout back into place after filling basket with filter and grounds----a different style than my old one. This one, easier to add water.
So all in all, I'm happy with the style, features (it has a delay setting), coffee flavor and amount of heat and it's simplicity....AND it's WHITE! Not many coffeemakers are offered in white.
We replaced an old one-button Black and Decker (no longer available, and not repairable) with this Mr. Coffee. In virtually every respect, the new machine is inferior to the old one.
A major drawback--for us-- is the height of the machine when the lid is opened for water and coffee filling. While the height when closed is about 12 inches, the very large (ungainly, you might say) lid adds about 8.5 inches when up, for a total height of 20.5 inches. Thus, to load the machine it must be completely moved out from under standard cabinets that sit 18 inches above counter tops. Since the machine also has a large footprint, for us it had to sit very close to the counter's edge. (Note this "huge top" is a feature of many other coffeemakers; check before you buy if you intend to partially operate under cabinets.)
The coffee and water loading is awkward. Regarding coffee, the few machines remaining on the market with swing-out coffee baskets are much easier to deal with. Other reviewers have mentioned the overfill-prevention holes that must be avoided when pouring in water. We found that excessive care was needed to get the water into the narrow reservoir, with the swinging spout somewhat in the way, while also avoiding the holes.
This coffeemaker leaves a lot of condensation in the reservoir after brewing. When the lid is raised, the condensed water partially falls into the reservoir and partially goes down the back and onto the counter top. With the old one, we liked to leave the top open to allow evaporation after use, while the machine was parked back under the cabinets. This coffeemaker is too tall, with the lid open, to do that.
The machine is noisy. It makes a lot of gurgling sounds when brewing, with continuing outbursts later.
When removing the carafe during brewing, the CG13 still drips some coffee ("pause `n drip" feature) onto the hot plate, which then hisses and burns off under the replaced carafe.
The coffee in the carafe, as it sits on the hot plate after brewing, tends to acquire a burned taste.
Of course, many other coffeemakers have some of these faults to some extent, but this machine brings them all together, in excess, in one device.
We've had good Mr. Coffee machines in the past, but their art of design seems to have faltered in this one.
We returned this coffeemaker to Amazon (refund given, no questions asked) and eventually bought Hamilton Beach 46201 which, though not perfect (the carafe design is not great), is much better than the Mr. Coffee reviewed here.
