Simple and durable

I just ordered our second one of these. We purchased the identical model almost 10 years ago and it finally died. We make a full batch of espresso every single morning for homemade lattes with the occasional second round (if we have guests or want an early afternoon bonus latte on the weekends). The device is simple. Because there aren't any fancy options or electronic buttons, there are less possible things that can break on it, which is a plus for me. Since we make two lattes every morning (= 4 shots of espresso total, or one full carafe) I find it more efficient to microwave the milk instead of using the built in steamer/frother. As a former barista, the froth on top was fun, but not worth the effort at home.

In the last ten years, we have had to purchase a replacement carafe once because the original was accidentally set down too hard on the counter and shattered.

Update 7/11/15: Moving from 5 to 2 stars. The first one we order years ago was WONDERFUL. Unfortunately, when it finally died, the replacement leaked all over. When brewing, water would drip from the top and get all over the counter. Clearly it was defective. We contacted Mr. Coffee directly to let them know about the issue. They rushed a replacement to our house (thanks!) and it worked well at first. After 1-2 months of daily use, this "leakage" problem is re-occuring with increasing frequency. While this USED to be a quality-made product that stood the test of time, I'm not going to give them another shot. Sad.

Update 6/5/16: Don't buy this. 10 years ago this was an awesome machine. I'm now on #5 because I refused to believe that the quality had dropped that much and I wanted to leverage all of the spare accessories that I'd accumulated. Go with something else. Not only have all of the new ones leaked to varying degrees, but filter holders now are all made of cheaper parts and the handles snap off easily. I was putting up with it, but now they don't make spares of those! RUN!!!

Good for the Price, Makes Yummy Lattes

This machine is pretty compact so it does not take up too much counter space which is great. I have to admit I didn't have high expectations for an espresso machine at this price point, but my boyfriend and I are totally amazed by the espresso this machine produces. There is a slight learning curve but you figure it out really quick. I use Cafe Bustelo ground espresso and have been using the plastic tamper that comes with this machine. The majority of my shots have tasted pretty good but I always mix my shots with milk. It does produce a crema but the shots are not super syrupy or thick. There were only two times that the espresso turned out bitter but I was playing with different amounts of ground in the filter and tamping the espresso using different pressures.

I noticed a lot of reviews complain about the frothing arm for milk. My frothing arm did not look the same as the one in the picture (it was actually located towards the rear of the machine - not the best location) but I figured out the best way to get hot, steaming, foaming milk. When I use this machine I have to move it toward me because of the location of the frothing arm. I removed the plastic sleeve from the wand because the plastic sleeve was causing milk to splatter everywhere which seems to be a common complaint in reviews. By removing the plastic sleeve I no longer have the milk splattering issue and I also have more control over the amount of foam I want. I can heat the milk with minimal foam, or heat the milk longer to get more sweetness and more volume.

Another word of advice is to make sure you use enough water in order to get enough steam for your milk. The espresso craft holds 8 oz and numbered for 2 ounce shots. If you want four shots you need to fill water up to the top of the metal band on the craft. If you want two shots (4 oz), you need to fill the water up to the imaginary 3 shot line or higher to get enough steam to heat and froth the milk. General rule of thumb is to add 1.5 to 2 additional ounces of water for frothing the milk. Keep in mind you have to manually change the brew feature to the steam feature once the brewed espresso hits the desired number of espresso shots in the craft. Have your cup of milk ready and submerged in the frothing arm when you change the brew feature over to the steam feature. By adding the additional 1.5 - 2 ounces of water you will have more than enough steam to heat and froth your milk. I usually have enough steam to clean the frothing arm with a clean cup of water after my milk has been heated. I also noticed that milk also tends to cake the wand so have a kitchen towel or bar mop towel handy to wipe it down after each use.

If you are unsure or on the fence about purchasing this machine, you should buy it! I have been using this machine every morning and multiple times on weekends to make shots of espresso, one morning I drank 8 shots.....not sure if that is healthy. But that should tell you the quality of espresso this machine produces, no one drinks 8 shots in a day if the espresso tastes bad right??? Yes, you may need to tweak your espresso brewing skills a bit to get the taste you want, but making espresso is considered an art form you perfect to get the taste you want. You cannot expect to press start, walk away, and have the perfect cup. You have to create it the you way you want it and you can with this machine.

I suspect this product is keeping Mr. Coffee in business. You cannot expect a product at this price to perform well, yet this machine has not let me down.

I have made a latte daily in my own house since 1998; usually two or three. A day. I have no shame.

I have owned a variety of expensive machines, including pump machines. The volume at which they operate is ridiculous. Next door neighbors should not be able to HEAR you simply making coffee! The Mr.Coffee model shocked me when I gave it a try about five years ago. I could not believe how well it worked and at such a quiet volume. It makes a lovely latte and perfect foam.

I am certain the machine was never designed for the use ...er ...abuse I put it through. After my two to three a day habit, the machine gives out in about 6 months. That's okay by me! For the price, it does not bother me to replace it.

Also, be mindful that the first five or so drinks in the new machine may have a slight metallic/plastic taste. This is normal with this (and other) machines. It will go away.

The steamer on this machine is incredible. Hands down the best steamer I have used. However, the espresso side leaves something to be desired. This makes great coffee if you are using it as a percolator, but for mochas, it doesn't do it. The coffee ends up WAY too bitter because the temp for the coffee isn't right. It's a pretty durable machine though.

I love this espresso machine. It's fun being able to make lattes at home. Frothing the milk takes some practice but I'm willing to work on it. Besides the steamed milk and foam isn't the important part. It's the espresso and the machine makes really good espresso.

It is also a nice compact size. It fits on top of my microwave next to my 12 cup coffee maker and coffee grinder.
