From Booklist

Gr. 5-7. When his Pa joins the Union army as a soldier, 11-year-old Willie goes along as a drummer boy. They're assigned to different companies of the Third Vermont Regiment, and Willie shares a tent with some older boys from back home. As the Army of the Potomac marches through Virginia, their war consists mainly of camp life, discomfort, and retreat, though they see action at Lee's Mill and Malvern Hill. Willie meets Lincoln twice and receives the Congressional Medal of Honor. Despite the publisher's disclaimer that "No character in this book is intended to represent any actual person," Wisler's acknowledgments and epilogue concern the archival records he researched and the historical people represented in his novel, including Willie Johnston and other members of the regiment. Wisler achieves a credible presentation of camp life, though like many books based on real people and incidents, its ties to the facts seem to hamper it as fiction. Carolyn Phelan

This book was suggested reading material alongside a writing curriculum my son uses. He enjoyed the book.

I bought this for my grandson, who's is 9 years old and very much interested in Lincoln and anything to do with it. He is really enjoying it and is learning much about the civil war along with it. My specific intention was to start familiarizing him with the Civil War and to start peaking his interest. This book is doing exactly what I wanted..

My son chose this book for a school project so I also read it with him. I found the book fasicinating and learned so much about the young boys who were in the Civil War. especially about Willie still being the youngest recepient of the medal of Honor. Truely a great read for children.

One of the best novels I have read about the Civil War and the youngest person to ever be awarded the Medal of Honor. It is a true story told in novel form. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down until I had finished it.
