What's the Difference?

I love it when buyers ask me this question. Having designed and sold multi thousands of pet carriers and hearing every issue and concern I can answer this here as best I can. I know its hard when shopping online. All of the pet carriers you see look similar and its hard to compare materials, features and the "look and feel" as one can easily do in person, but here is my summary of what to look for in a pet carrier and what is most important to know or ask, so look for these key features in all brands and compare -

  1. Zippers - These are one of my pet peeves as the zipper quality can turn a fantastic carrier into a loser very fast. When the zipper breaks at the airport or even in your car your carrier of choice becomes basically worthless. Make sure the brand you are looking at includes hi quality zippers from a reputable zipper brand. My totes are all designed with only premium brand zippers, and I improve and upgrade them often as new and better versions come along such as the automatic self locking zippers on this model, removing the need or worry over clasps that are flimsy and unreliable over time.
  2. Carrier Structure - Soft Sided Pet Carriers by definition are frameless and are mostly only supported by thin steel wire running along the edges and sides of the tote. Keep in mind when you look over images in a listing on any product those will be taken to show off the product in the best possible way, and are often edited to improve the look of the product image. It is very hard to see differences in materials and structure in a product image, but all of my totes are designed with a very strong waterproof nylon material that is also used in the manufacture of military grade parachutes. The materials used help to avoid the sagging, wrinkled look and give the totes additional structure.
  3. Pet Safety & Comfort - Lastly, but the most important feature. The pet tote you choose should have locking zippers and very strong mesh. They should have a leash tether to insure your pet can be secured while stressed during travels. They should have well designed and secure carrying straps. They should have a comfortable bedding pad. All of Mr. Peanut's tote designs include all of these and more. I also add a thick and plush faux fleece pad with a 1/4" plywood base for your pet's comfort and to give a strong, stable base to keep the tote from "sinking" under the weight of your pet.

What Do Airlines Require?

AIRLINE REQUIREMENTS - Buyers often ask about "TSA", "IATA" and "FAA" rated and the fact is that there are only guidelines for animals carried in the cargo holds of airliners, but these do NOT apply to in passenger cabin pet carriers. Always keep in mind each airline sets their own specific requirements, and they can even vary from their domestic, international and shuttle routes so it is always advised to check with your airline of choice. All airlines have very similar sizing guidelines, and all will require your pet to be comfortable in the carrier, well ventilated and to remain under the seat in front of you during flight. The popularity of soft sided carriers stems from their adjustability to fit under the various seat configurations of modern aircraft, and we have designed our carrier to have a pliable top so that it can easily stow under the 8.5" seat in front of you.

Nicely designed and well-made carrier -- but my cat escaped
This is a nicely designed and well-made carrier. The removable plywood insert in the fleece pad is a really good idea and it's well-implemented. I bought it a few weeks ago so my 11-pound cat Oscar could get used to it before we traveled. He seemed pretty comfortable and would climb into it and stay for a while and we made a trip or two to the vet for practice. But when we flew recently, there was a period about two hours into the flight when he just did *not* want to be in there anymore and he fought to get out . . . like a cat. He pushed so hard that he was able to separate the closed zipper in the top opening and he got out. I ended up chasing him down the aisle. (If you were on a recent Alaska Air flight and saw a black kitty running toward the cockpit, yeah, that was us.) He had it figured out by then and he managed to push out through the zipper a total of 3 times during that flight. (I was simultaneously proud of him for being smart and really irritated at him for being a trouble-maker.) I ended up holding him in my lap for most of the rest of the 6-hour flight. He was happier with that. The flight attendants were not.Clarification: He didn't push two zipper pulls apart; I had all of the various zipper pulls clipped to each other. He separated the zipped-closed teeth of a zipper. Also, I didn't have him clipped to the leash because he's a 100% indoor cat and he doesn't wear a collar.Anyway, I can't really say if it's the carrier's fault or just my little wildcat is too strong. I'd guess that the same thing might happen with any carrier that uses zippers. I wonder what design improvements could be made to fix this issue. By the way, he also managed to chew/rip a few small holes in the mesh panels but they did hold together for the most part.

2021 Edit:
I am still using this Pet carrier for my cat to this day. In 2020 I moved from Texas to Missouri, no issues and again I flew Delta. But of course because of Covid I found myself not being able to stay in Missouri so I ended up driving to Indiana and then flying back to Texas to live with family to assist them during Quarantine. This bag is still in the same condition it was when I got it, the interior has been machine washed gently multiple times and is still perfect. This bag is going to last me a long time, and my cat has absolutely no issues with it. Its been perfect for vet visits as well. I am so glad I chose this bag.
------
This bag is nearly perfect.
There was plenty of space for my 1yo 9-10lbs male cat to fit comfortably. He actually likes the bag because he likes the windows so I now have it set up on a shelf for him to lay in. (I recommend this because he wants NOTHING to do with the bag at first)

I used this bag to get on a normal Delta flight from Des Moine airport. The bag was never checked passed a visual and casual glance. They didn't ask to measure or any thing, just made sure the bag could Be secured and wasn't obviously too big or small.
I had two flights and spent about 6 total hours carrying/using this bag. Never once was uncomfortable and it was easy to carry. They upgraded the strap so the hooks don't break like old reviews say, the clasps are metal now to prevent it from happening, which means it's a very sturdy strap.
My average sized cat wasn't heavy to carry either.

This was literally the perfect bag to get on short notice and I will be using it for as long as possible to transport my pet from now on. My only complaint was that when I received the bag, one side did not want to stay up after unfolding it. Not a big deal, it still stays up, just sags a tiny bit.

If you need a decent cheap pet travel bag, this is a good one. Worked for an 9-10lb 1yo male cat on a Delta flight.

I love this bag. I fly a lot with my 9lb chihuahua and she doesnt mind being in here. She can lay down comfortably (shes pretty long and tall) and she can peek her head out. This fits under seats on airplanes. I have used it on United flights as well as Delta and Southwest easily. The one i did struggle with was on a united express plane, i didnt have room to stretch my legs after i put this under the seat. Besides that it has held up on nurmerous trips, it is easy to carry and straps onto a suitcase. My dog seems comfortable and the storage pockets are good size. I usually fold all of her flying papers, poop bags, hand wipes and keys in the big mesh side pocket. The smaller side pocket is solid so I put my small wallet/ccs in there along with random essentials like my pill case chapstick potable phone chargers and sometimes more. Its a tight squeeze but I always fit everything! I definitely recommend this and if it ever breaks (which it doesnt seem like it will ever do), i will order another. I was happily surprised with the quality of this bag.

Great product! Used it to transport my 18lb silky terrier on a round trip Delta flight and she fit nicely below the seat in front of me. Also used to transport 12lb cat to and from the vet. Feels very sturdy. The clip locks in all zippers was also helpful as my dog figured out how to use her nose to open the zipper. Also love the soft sided, collapsible style for storage. I've previously only owned hard sided carriers which take up a ton of room to store. This product I am able to collapse easily and fit in several small spaces. My only concern with the product is I'm not sure how my dog would do if I needed to leave her for any amount of time alone, such as in a hotel or a friend's home while going to dinner, etc. Overall I'm very happy with the product.

It has taken me three years to write this review, and after three years of constant abuse, and I mean real abuse, this bag is still around and working for us. Of course, you can see the scars of time on it, but it is not broken or dysfunctional. If I had to buy a new bag, I would buy this one again without a doubt in my mind.

Amazing quality product. I bought this for my pet cat as the hard shell cases just cause her distress and she loves this carrier she will go in it and use it as a bed. She isnt stressed when using it to transport her. My favourite feature is the small side window that you can open to pet your animal or give treats or comfort. The mesh is strong (actually way more sturdy than I expected) and the whole product feels well made. The soft pet bed inside is removable to be washed should an animal have an accident while being transported/just general cleanliness. I highly recommend this product for small pets

This is a really nice carrier. My dog is 8 pounds and he has ample room in this. I highly recommend it.
He had a small Bergan carrier for 2 years and he still fits it but it's really snug now. He can stretch out a bit more in this one.
The only thing I wish is for the extra fleece bottoms to sell at a lower price to Canada as I'd love to order a few replacements.

Reviewed in Canada on January 25, 2018
It’s actually a 4.5 it could be just a tad sturdier on the top it can buckle one way or another with a little force or even sit hunched over when pet not in it. But it is still very well made great for travel etc, very breathable open feels pretty good quality like the board under the pad also for good base stability.
