I really learned a lot from the chapter on health. Did you know that the Army in the Mexican war had a higher death rate from disease deaths than in any other war? The conditions under which Army doctors operated to save men defy understanding. For example, the way they fixed venereal disease will curl your toes. The description of average drinking water will bring back your lunch. One account of the bug problem sounded like something out of a movie. The account said the person was covered head to toe with ants.
This book created a new appreciation in me for the Mexican War. I am sure this book will help me to better understand future books I would read about that War.
