PreS-Gr 2—Who will deliver Mrs. Turtle's new roller skates? Who could possibly be brave enough to swim past a shark and deliver a package to a clownfish? A family of stinky skunks needs their air freshener, but how will it ever reach them? Mr. Postmouse, of course! Follow Mr. Postmouse as he delivers the mail: all the way from the post office, through the forest village, past the dragon's den, to the tip-top of a mountain and back again. Filled with thoughtful, clever details and whimsical, folksy illustrations, Mr. Postmouse's Rounds will delight older and younger readers alike as they peer into imaginative cut-away views of the underground world of rabbits, turtles, dragons, bats, penguins, and other animal friends. Best of all, there's a surprise for Mr. Postmouse when he returns home at the end of the story. Imaginations will feast on the lively vignettes and playful personalities of these creatures and their special residences. While the text remains minimal and easy to follow, the main draw is the artwork, which will have independent readers poring over page after page of visual glee. Simple text and highly detailed illustrations are interwoven to create scenes that will spark discussions, fostering vocabulary development and narrative skills. VERDICT Delightful and charming characters at every turn make this an exceptional addition to any picture book collection.—Natalie Braham, Denver Public Library

The premise is simple: the reader is treated to watching Mr. Postmouse make his rounds through the neighborhood, which is a delightful place, with a wide variety of habitats. Mr. Postmouse delivers to the expected forest animals, but some of his customers live in the ocean, and others live on top of a snowy mountain. Mr. Postmouse does whatever it takes to make sure that the packages are delivered.
Mr. Postmouse does not encounter any adversity along the route, although he is grateful that he doesn’t have to deliver anything to Mr. Snake!
This book consists of watching Mr. Postmouse do his job, and the illustrations are what make this book truly extraordinary. I suppose the comparisons to Richard Scarry are inevitable because they both feature anthropomorphic animals, but Dubuc’s style is her own. The colors are more muted, and there are so many little details in each of the scenes. All of the houses are see-through, and what is going on inside the houses is always interesting. Mr. Bear has a pipe connecting his honey pot to the beehive on the roof. The penguins have a bathtub full of ice cubes. My girls especially enjoyed the rather cheeky illustration of the Rabbit family’s bathroom, complete with little rabbit pellets!
There are also several cameos from fairytale friends. These are not stated in the text. After all, the focus of the book is on following a dedicated public servant. No, you will only see these fairytale favorites by looking at the illustrations.
I would absolutely recommend Mr. Postmouse’s Rounds. This is a delightful book that will entertain preschoolers through those in the early years of elementary school. My girls absolutely loved this book, and we will be getting our own copy. I can also see this as an excellent choice for a gift book. The book itself is the typical length of a picture book, but it will likely take you much longer to read because of all the time taken to stop and pore over the illustrations!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved all the little insights into each animals personal life and home space; from how bear gets his honey to how the alligator family keeps their house nice and humid. I loved how the clocks in each home show the time progression throughout the day. It was interesting and educational to see what each animal eats and how they store their food, how they sleep, and what they do with their time in their own personal space.
There's so much going on in this book if you take the time to look closely. I enjoyed the inclusion of famous tales such as Goldilocks, the three pigs, and Little Red Riding Hood. The details are whimsical and fun with lots to look at. I read through the story a number of times and still found something new each time!
This book will keep kids entertained for a long time; from learning about animals habits and habitats, to exploring the architecture of each dwelling. Mr. Postmouse's Rounds has a little something for every reader to enjoy.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Kids Can Press for the free temporary ecopy of this book given in exchange for an honest review. I will definitely be buying this for my daughter so we can enjoy it over and over!
