Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-2-Told in four chapters, this gentle tale exudes warmth and understated humor. Mr. Putter embarks on a spring porch-painting project, only to be foiled when Tabby chases an inquisitive squirrel and Mrs. Teaberry's dog pursues a chipmunk, resulting in pink and blue footprints all over. Later, they all have a good laugh when a pink squirrel and a blue chipmunk run by. The text and illustrations convey the affectionate relationship between Mr. Putter, his cat, and their neighbors. The clearly rendered illustrations primarily done in greens, pinks, and yellows and outlined in pencil make this easy-reader a perfect choice for any weather.

From Kirkus Reviews

Rylant's (Bear Day, 1999, etc.) good-timing Mr. Putter and Tabby return with more of their gentle antics for young readers. This particular caper finds Mr. Putter and his old cat setting out to paint their porch. Mr. Putter rustles up some pink paint from the basement and starts to lay brush to wood when a squirrel invades the workspace, setting Tabby off like a rocket. Round and round the porch they scamper and the resulting paint job cannot be said to be exquisite. Next day Mr. Putter's neighbor Mrs. Teaberry and her dog Zeke come to help cover the pink with blue, when a chipmunk detonates Zeke's composure, with a resulting blue disaster. Finally a coat of yellow gets laid down and dried before further mishap. Another fully cheering and self-contained story from Rylant, couched in language that is just enough of a challenge for early readers and with a story that has momentum to carry them on. And Howard's (100th Day Worries, 1999, etc.) affable illustrations continue to smoothly convey the story to the reader's eye, adding his own comic touches. My kids and I love all of Cynthia Rylant's picture books and early readers, but these books, about an elderly man and his elderly cat, are our favorites. Their latest adventure is even funnier than the earlier ones and the illustrations will have adults and children laughing out loud. I love the rhythm of Rylant's words and the way she expresses the affection Mr. Putter and Tabby have for each other without being sappy. Children deserve books that are not just entertaining but also well-written and this book definitely fits the bill.

The newest book in the Mr. Putter & Tabby series is a delight to read. Both my children (5 and 7) had a great laugh when it was read to them. They thought it was so funny when more than the porch got painted. We like Mr. Putter & Tabby even better than Henry and Mudge, which is saying alot.

My children, ages three and five, adore Mr. Puuter and Tabby, and I believe this is Ms. Rylant's funniest rendition of their adventures so far. When the box arrived, I read the book alone because I couldn't stand to wait. Ms. Rylant uses a nice collection of short and medium-length words for beginning readers, and the story rollicks along. Mr. Howard's illustrations capture the subjects' expressions beautifully. We checked these books out of the library so often that we finally ordered some to keep.

Do you like cats? Do you like books? If you do you should read, Mr. Putter and Tabby Paint the Porch. Read this book to learn this book to learn a lot about what happens when Mr. Putter and Tabby Paint the Porch. For example, squirrel makes footprints with the paint. There are four main characters, Mr. Putter, Tabby. Miss Teaberry and Zeke. Another reason I like the book is because it has fun voices that you can make when reading the book. I love the book because I think the pictures are really fun to look at. Now you should start reading. Then you can get Mr. Putter and Tabby Paint the Porch and figure out what happens next. My children and I have been enjoying Mr. Putter and Tabby books ever since we accidentally ran across them at the library.

This charming story is truly brought to life through the illustrations. Ms. Rylant does a beautiful job of crafting her characters with words, but Arthur Howard gives them the final touch with his lively illustrations. The facial expressions on the characters often send us into giggles even before we've read the story! We have come to love Mr. Putter and his fine cat Tabby as well as their next-door neighbors, Mrs. Teaberry and her good dog Zeke.

I love these stories because the humor touches the heart and funnybone of both children and adults. We have shared some wonderful moments through these books. I feel they also give an opportunity for children to peek into the lives of the elderly and understand that their thoughts and feelings are not all that different. Mr. Putter is truly just a little boy in grown up clothing.

I highly recommend all of the Mr. Putter and Tabby books, but I'd have to say this is our favorite.

When I taught second grade, the Mr. Putter and Tabby books were a favorite of mine, and of my classes. The characters are so real that you can actually identify with them. Now that I am a grandmother of a 4 year old little girl, I am introducing her to some of my favorite authors, Cynthia Rylant, being right up there on the list.

Great for early readers who are past the phonics books. The story is fun, the lessons are not heavy-handed, and the books are loved by both eager readers and struggling readers.

This is one of my go-to books for giving out at the Reading to Dogs program

I highly recommend this entire series. I started reading Mr. Putter & and his fine cat Tabby to my children when they were very young. It was the first series that they truly loved, and to this day (5 years later) they have not outgrown it one bit. The characters are incredibly endearing but realistic enough so that you will feel very engaged in their simple everyday adventures. Start with "Mr. Putter and Tabby Pour the Tea" which gives the origin of Mr. Putter's relationship with Tabby and then you can fully enjoy this one which is a very funny installment in the series.
