Editorial Reviews

In an industry where careers can be shorter than the duration of a song, the BoDeans have proven their longevity with their newest recording Mr. Sad Clown on 429 Records.

Nearly three decades ago, Kurt Neumann and Sammy Llanas formed the BoDeans in Waukesha, Wisconsin combining passionate guitar riffs, intricate vocal harmonies and heartfelt lyrics that forged their signature sound.

With a history that began with Rolling Stone Magazine naming them Best New Band and continued with eight albums in the Billboard Top 200, multiple singles in the Top 40 and tours with megastars like U2 and Robbie Robertson, the BoDeans have amassed a dedicated fan base that keep coming back for more.

Mr. Sad Clown is a stronger album than their last release, Still; however, there is nothing here that is really new or pushing the envelope in terms of creativity (or greatness).

The album really does "sound" like a Bodeans album, which isn't a bad thing, and while there are some decent tracks, there is nothing here that can compare to the music they released earlier in their careers. 2004's Resolution still has to be considered the best of the three albums they have released in the last decade.

For all us Bodeans fans, I guess we should feel grateful the band found a way to survive, even as a local touring band, much less releasing new albums at this point in their careers.

The legal issues with their label and the 3+ year hiatus from the studio took a toll on the band - even though they have been quoted as saying that coming out the other end of that whole situation has re-energized their creative juices.

Losing Bobby G. was also a big hit - maybe not so much in terms of creativity - but more so with chemistry.

All in all though, for 50 year old musicians, Kurt and Sammy can still consistently entertain better than the majority of musicians half their age.

There's something so dependable and alluring about a band that knows it's mind and keeps crafting great rock and roll year after year - these guys are great live and this new album is long overdue. I'm wearing this one out the next few months. And i don't know but think 'Stay' ought to be a hit - great classic song!

The BoDeans are like fine wine. They only get better with age.
This latest addition to their music is very moving. It has some really great songs.
The song If... was a great reminder not to take for granted all those who have touched our lives in special ways.
I would say this album is most like their previous album Blend.

Strong CD all the way through!! I got to see The BoDeans live at the Best Buy in Downers Grove, Illinois. I have come to believe when Best Buy backs a band or musician that has been around the block a few times, the CD is always a very strong effort. Mr. Sad Clown is no exception to that rule. The 26 Letters 12 Notes CD by Dave Mason also fits the Best Buy rule. Best Buy brings in the Musicians. They play live for about 30-45 minutes. Then the band sign autographs. It's all a lot of fun and you walk away with a very good CD musically.

I was reminded of how much I love this band when I saw them open for Cheap Trick at SXSW. I heard a few of their new songs and knew I had to pick up this album when it came out. Just like all their others, Mr. Sad Clown is chalked full of hits and truly showcases the talent of this legendary band. This is going to be in my ipod for awhile!

Mr. Sad Clown is the latest from the Bodeans. It is a laid back, moody cd that yearns, at times, for days gone by when life was more carefree. It tables 15 tracks with a majority sung by Kurt who also produced and played/programmed the drums.

Love the sound and, of course, the voices of Sammy and Kurt. I have listened to it five times thus far. Initially my impression is that it is the weakest of the last three studio cds. Lyrically, it is okay. Musically, a little better. Although 15 tracks in length, there are few tracks that really stand out. I do like three songs that Kurt sings the lead on: Shine, Back Then, and the comical Cheesecake Pan.

Having T-Bone Burnett's imput probably would have helped as well as a seasoned drummer.

Despite my reservations about Mr. Sad Clown it is always great to hear something new from the Bodeans. I look forward to seeing them sometime this summer in concert.

I've been a BoDeans fan since Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams. They are still one of my favorite bands, so I bought Mr. Sad Clown as soon as I found out it was released. It has some great pop hooks, and will be pleasingly familiar to BoDeans fans, but seems a little tired. Hopefully, there will be a tour with stops in NC - I've seen the BoDean live at least 4 times, and they rock the house every time.
