Recently arrived in Calgary, Alberta after a long, hard journey from Boston, sixteen-year-old Katherine Mary O’Fallon never imagined that she could lose her heart so easily—or so completely. Sort of a Canadian version of Little House on the Prairie, the book covers the joys and sorrows of life in the Canadian wilderness. At one point the challenges are too much for Katherine, and she returns to Boston and her family for an extended stay. Ultimately she finds city life too restrictive, and homesick for the wide open spaces of Canada, she returns to her real home.
Although the book is 100+ years old, it retains a freshness and relevance that never seems stilted or out of date. Love, hate, birth, death, joy and sorrow are themes that never grow old because they are a part of everyone's life. It isn't easy for Katherine, or for us, to cope with these major life events, but ultimately she finds her joy in her life with Mike and the great wilderness that is their home.
I don't and won't give away things, it's just there were certain twists and such made this book hard. It's definitely not a happy happy book. Oh, it has a hea. But, it's a hard, harsh book. There's love and kindness- but reflective of the harshness of real life.

Whilst Romance or Love is one of the themes in this book (but it is in most books if i'm honest) - its not the kind of love that you see in blockbuster romantic comedy films, but real love, which is hard work. The theme isn't so much love, but life which happens to have love in it, but much more also.
I also worried that because of the period the book was written in, and the concept of a city girl falling for a rugged Mountie, the character of Katherine Mary would be weak, or helpless - requiring a man to help her through. But she isn't. She is just real. Her relationship with Mike is shown as balanced. Also the character of Sarah is depicted as one of the strongest female characters I have read about and I loved her - She is Reminiscent of Sara from These Is My Words!
I think this book is such a triumph because it was written by both Benedict Freeman and Nancy Freeman, which provides not just one viewpoint of a relationship, which can often lead to a one sided understanding and incomplete depiction of a relationship, but a masterfully crafted relationship, with insights from both the male and female perspective
