Purchase options and add-ons
- Historical Context
- A Historical Timeline of the late 19th and early 20th Century Britain
This Problem Play is a powerful criticism of cultural hypocrisy and women's economic enslavement. It is one of Shaw's most controversial and thought-provoking works, sparking discussions about morality, women's rights, class, and the inherent biases in Victorian society.
About
"Mrs. Warren's Profession" is a contentious play created by George Bernard Shaw in 1893 that focuses on societal conventions and late-nineteenth-century socioeconomic reality. The play, which premiered in 1902, is about Vivie Warren, a Cambridge-educated young woman who is confronted with the shocking news of her mother's occupation – prostitution. Mrs. Warren, Vivie's mother, owns multiple brothels around Europe. Due to restricted prospects and extreme poverty, she turned to this occupation, which she later rationalised as a means of ensuring a wealthy future for her daughter. Mrs. Warren tries to defend her choices throughout the play, claiming that she was forced into the profession owing to a lack of possibilities for women in a male-dominated Victorian England.
