J. E. Rogers
You and your children will not want to miss this marvelous story. Four inquisitive and intelligent children are chosen to travel to a magical island to experience its unusual plant and animal life. They are especially excited to see an exotic orchid which blooms once every one hundred years. This unique plant’s energy helps to protect the planet by repairing the ozone layer of the atmosphere. When the children discover the island, and the orchid is in the path of a powerful hurricane, they muster all of their special skills to protect it and the earth from an environmental disaster.
This is an excellent early reader that is not just an exciting read. It teaches a lesson about working together to solve a problem. It also is a confirmation to all children that each one of us has extraordinary skills and we need only to search within ourselves to find them and use them.
I highly recommend this lively, well-written story by Susan Love, and Illustrated by Patrick Harrington.
While Ms. Love's book was quite a fun read, I loved the fact that each child had a special gift to bring to the story. Each child had a special gift. Teachers get to help children discover their own special gifts. This aspect of the book could be a multi-disciplinary project to have students present his or her special gift.
The book ends at an interesting point. Students can write what they think happens next.
This book is quite magical! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and can't wait to read it to my class. Kudos Ms. love!
