From the Author
There are far too many families "caving in" to the desire to pick up that sweet little doggie in the window. Our emotions get the best of us, we cross our intuitive, even declared boundaries, and adopt an animal against our best inner judgment. And then, when struck with the intense level of responsibility, find following through with our commitment completely overwhelming. Too many dogs are returned to the pound. Too many family members' hearts are broken.
I raised Sheridan, in an age-appropriate way at each developmental level, so that she was very clear about the realities of life. Our book, Much to Do Before a Dog, does not hold back. Our experiences also are not romanticized. Our Beta readers got that. As we read our book to them about picking up the poop, we found them shaking their heads, shrugging their shoulders, and talking with their hands saying, "Well, it's true. You have to do that when you have a dog."
Our best approach is to not pretend with our children and to trust that they are much smarter than most people give them credit for. This book supports their high level of intelligence and speaks to them plainly, with credibility, instilling trust. It holds their attention and leaves them wanting more.
If you tell us your kids are ready for Much to Do With a Dog, perhaps that will become our next endeavor!
