Excellent concept. I would be giving it as a gift as well.
I try very hard to give my children access to diverse stories to help them embrace and appreciate the humanity and uniqueness of others, but I also think it is important and rare to see African and African American Muslims represented in children's literature. Representation matters. There were many things my children could see and identify with as well as many things they were curious about and appreciated seeing differently. (Namely the approach to birthday celebrations).
The timing of this book was great as we were studying Quests and Muhiima definitely goes on one. The things Muhiima learns along the way are the most meaningful, identity-shaping, life lessons that children take away from stories.
Even though a Muslim-family is at the focus of this story the book is accessible to non-Muslims. The core values of love, respect, and family are important lessons for all families. We are pleased to add this to our home collection and plan to share it with others.
