My son is a Boy Scout, and has wanted a multi-tool for his own use. He has been using knives for several years, and has a good understanding of the dangers and purposes of knives. After viewing this knife in a sporting goods store, I researched the knife on-line prior to purchasing from Amazon, which priced the knife at just a little over 50% of the brick and mortar store's price.
This knife has not had any significant use, but I find that the construction of the knife seems very sturdy, and expect the knife to last many years. My older Gerber is all metal, and, although well constructed, is not extremely comfortable, and requires two hands when using the pliers. This knife is very comfortable to hold, and with the spring action in the pliers, could be used with just one hand. The case if well constructed also, which should hold up with normal use.
I'm not a Swiss Army knife fan, as I don't see putting options in a knife that will probably not be used. I don't see the need for the scissors in this knife, as they are very small, and seem to be the item that I would see as being the least durable in the knife. As I don't feel they will be used much, if they did have an issue and failed to operate in the future, there would be little lost with the knife, however, I would have rather seen something more functional than the scissors, but others may find the scissors of benefit.
Overall, a good quality knife, with a good grip and case, which should serve anyone's purpose who is looking for a multi-tool, and a good option if the plier function is a major reason for your purposes. I'm not sure this knife is a good buy at $75, but at the $30 - $35 range, it is a great buy in my book...
With a couple of Leathermans and a Gerber Multiplier already in my bag of tricks, I don't consider the Bear Grylls tool to be overkill at all. One goes fishing with me, one lives in the glove box of my car, and there's one in my 72-hour kit. The BG tool will probably go camping with us when the season returns.
