In the English Language: "A word can have a thousand meanings." However, in American Sign Language, one Sign could have a multitude of English descriptive words or phrases. Knowing how to take the context of how a sign is used in an ASL sentence is vital to the translation process from ASL Signing to English Voice Interpreting. This textbook does exactly that. It gives lessons and activities that aid in teaching the basic understanding of how to expand on the many possible meanings of ASL Signs and apply them in a classroom situation. It is a wonderful example of practical knowledge as well as something to hold onto for future reference. I have used this book from cover to cover and I highly recommend this book for first year ASL Students.

I couldn't be happier with this book. This book has been a great help in my studies becoming an interpreter. Its a whole book on context, which is something many people take for granted. Even in that very sentence the phrase "take for granted," you know exactly what it means but how do you explain it quickly. Also how many times have you heard the word "right" and had to figure out if it meant correct, the direction, or your legal rights. I would recommend this book to anyone from all ends of the spectrum from sign language student to seasoned interpreter.

This book has been a book I referenced many times in my journey of learning. Also while explaining the complexities of interpreting I will reference this book. This book allows for an eye opening experience that allows people to take a step back and think about all the different ways to sign one word depending on the meanings. It provides great practice and I find myself sitting down with friends and discussing how we would sign a word in each context. It is a great learning tool that has significantly helped me be able to think about contextual accuracy. Great book overall and highly recommended.

The English Language is so full of idioms, and it's often hard to realize that we're using a different meaning each time we use the same word. With this book, you will gain a better understanding of the various ways we use English words, and a broader mindset for how to sign the various meanings of the similar or same words. To this day I refer back to it. I recommend it to anyone wishing to improve their conceptual accuracy in their sign language usage.

I absolutely love this book. In the begining of my sign language journey, I didn't realize the importance of the Multiple Meanings book. This book applies to how important it is to interpret a concept correctly, and not always word for word. It helps make you understand ASL better and deaf culture. I cannot express enough how important it is to to know the real meaning of a word, idiom, or concept! This book has helped tremendously and is a keeper.

This book has been a wonderful tool in learning American Sign Language. Most of the book contains lists of sentences. It will list a word like "run" and following that word will be several sentences using the word run in different ways. This is wonderful for practicing different ways of signing things. You are forced to think about what each sentence means, not just what the words are. I got a lot of use out of this both in class and out.

This book is great even after I was done with the class we used it in I still use it. It is a great way for you to practice not only interpreting English to ASL but it makes you think about which sign would best match for each different use of the same word. It also may help you expand your knowledge of idioms and how to interpret them. There are many many different topics and activities, highly recommended.
