Captures the fun and adventure of the 1st Mummy film

The Mummy was such a hit they had to turn it into a franchise. The O’Connells, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, returned. They were trying to stop the bad guy from the original movie Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) from bringing back the soul of his ancient lover Meela Nais (Patricia Velasquez) and control the army of the Scorpion King so that they could rule the world.

The movie used the same formula of the first film and was very effective. There’s mummies, scorpions, gun play, sorcery, etc. They did push it a little bit too much with a blimp. This was also Dwayne Johnson's first major role in a big blockbuster movie and then only let him say two words and then he was just an animated monster. Otherwise it captured the fun and adventure of the first release.

"The Mummy Returns"- A fan-favorite gets a beautiful 4K release!

2001's "The Mummy Returns" has long been a fan favorite for many, right along with its 1999 predecessor. They were the right movies at the right place at the right time. Two wonderful adventure romps loosely inspired by the classic Universal monster-movie that quickly found a massive worldwide audience.

Director Stephen Sommers' sequel once again follows Rick and Evelyn O'Connell, now with a young son of their own who shares in their adventures. When their old nemesis Imhotep is once again raised from the dead, it turns into a race against time as both our heroes and the dastardly villains try to make their way to a mythical golden pyramid which holds the key to commanding the deadly army of Anubis.

"The Mummy Returns" is very much a balls-to-the-wall action picture with non-stop special effects and increasingly farfetched set-pieces. It's the ultimate escapism movie- something that's just pure fun and spectacle from beginning to end. While the story is full of holes and the execution is often flimsy, that's not really the point. Sommers and his wonderful cast are just trying to entertain the audience, and in that respect the movie succeeds very well. It's a very easy movie to pop on and enjoy, and it makes for perfect rainy-day entertainment. Just like 1999's "The Mummy," it's a movie I've revisited many times over the years, and I plan to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

And if you're a fan of this film, the 4K release is definitely worth picking up! I'd previously owned the movie on both DVD and Blu-Ray, but this 2017 Ultra-HD disc is by far the current definitive release. The picture is a fantastic step up over the standard HD Blu-Ray, with an increased sharpness in many key sequences and some stunning HDR colors that practically pop right off of the screen. Right from the film's opening moments, you get a taste of what's to come, and it's just fantastic all around.

There is something of a tradeoff that I want to bring up though. As is sometimes the case, the increased resolution does make some of the dodgier effects stand out more. Including the infamous "Scorpion King" battle at the end of the film, which looks worse than ever. So be prepared for that.

Still, the typically beautiful image and the film's sheer fun-factor make this a must-own 4K release for me. The film typically looks better than ever, and the action comes fast and furious. It's great entertainment that is still appealing nearly twenty years later.

I'm giving "The Mummy Returns" 4K UHD release a perfect 5 out of 5. If you're a fan of the film and have a 4K TV, be sure to pick this up.

This is my go-to movie. I put it on often while doing weekend housecleaning or when I just want to sit and have a good laugh.
The mummy is more terrifying than the original version since he gets a modern day CGI twist. The acting is campy and fun, at times serious, but none of the actors take themselves too seriously or distract from the film. The actors seem to be genuinely enjoying themselves and I never get tired of watching it.
This movie makes my top 5 list of all time.

Great sequel, the movie retained the campy-ness of the original. It does require that you suspend disbelief for a couple of hours and strap on for a funny, eventful ride into the world of mummies.
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are as funny as ever and have an undeniable chemistry that translates into a great love story.

I'm obsessed with this movie and have been since I was a child. The production value is higher than the first movie and you can definitely tell. While it's a better quality movie, it misses a lot of the romance and humor of the first. This one has a lot more action and heartbreak, but again lacks the charm of the first. Not to sound like I'm knocking it because, like I said, this is my favorite movie ever tied with The Mummy. Highly recommended!

Here's 1 example of what happens when a movie studio makes a sequel just because the original (the 1st remake of a classic or 1st of a series is successful) you get something like this.

I'm not saying this movie is bad, but I also don't really understand so many great reviews. There are a few plotholes, a few coincidences, as in people not dying or dying because something random happens to save or kill them, and then you have the usual minions who are in this literally only to die, also some of the most stupid dialogue I've ever heard in a movie (our soles will mate forever.........are you kidding me?) It's not so much romantic as plain stupid.

If your following the movie closely, it should mostly make sense, or you'll have watched a movie which, as fun as it can be, is quite frankly silly and plain ridiculous as the writers and director do what they can to stretch out a plot from the original which for this 1, is a bit overblown. The jist of the movie is getting to a location in time to save a child and saving the world from a villain or 2 who want loads of people dead and to rule the world by controlling an evil army cliché.

Imotep or however you spell his name is back, but not as scary and the effects are fairly strong in some places and fall totally flat in others. But this was released in 2001 so hey. However, this is still better than the 3rd 1 which won't be mentioned.

On a side note, the O"connell's son is a really big pain in the butt, his character doesn't improve much in part 3 either even though he's older. There is a warrior guy who seems obsessed with killing the O"connell's boy in this 1, he never gets to but I guess it's the thought that counts because I don't condone child murder in movies. It's sadistic and not necessary because there are other means to expand or progress with a plot.

I'm only reviewing this movie because I watched it after ages with my brother and thought I'd review. If I noted down the plotholes for this one which I might do later, I don't know how long that would take.

We all know that sequels are rarely on par with first outings, but this one simply sucks.
So Evelyn is a reincarnated princess (Imhotep didn't seem to know her first time round), O'connell grew up in an orphanage in Cairo (yet seems to be very AMERICAN), O'connell Jr. doesn't know how old he is or what year it is (perhaps Evie got pregnant and gave birth the same day) and Jonathan can find an abandoned Routemaster bus to borrow 22 years before they came into service (that one's particularly impressive).
A fun romp. Leave your brain at the door, though.

Cue lots of crash bang wallop action all the way, plenty of special effects, and the odd bit of ancient egyptian ghost gore thrown in for good measure. Never takes itself seriously, and while it's not as good as the first (hey, what sequel ever is), kick back and enjoy it, there are worse films to watch.

The film starts with The Scorpion King leading his army on a campaign to conquer the world. The Scorpion King and his army are defeated and exiled to the desert of Ahm Shere and his pyramid is hidden in a jungle for years to come.

In 1933, Rick and Evelyn O'Connell explore a ruined mortuary structure in the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes with their son, Alex. They find the Bracelet of Anubis. In London, Alex puts on the bracelet, which shows him a vision with directions to the Oasis of Ahm Shere. Alex has seven days to reach the oasis, or the bracelet will kill him the moment the sun's rays shine on the Scorpion King's pyramid.

Rick and Alex run to the pyramid, barely making it before sunrise. The bracelet detaches from Alex's arm.

This film is good to watch and has lots of action. Watch out for the appearance of the London LT bus in the film.
