The third film in the The Mummy series freshens the franchise up by setting the action in China. There, the discovery of an ancient emperor's elaborate tomb proves a feather in the cap of Alex O'Connell (Luke Ford), a young archaeologist and son of Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello, taking over the role from Rachel Weisz). Unfortunately, a curse that turned the emperor (Jet Li) and his army into terra cotta warriors buried for centuries is lifted, and the old guy prepares for world domination by seeking immortality at Shangri La. The O'Connells barely stay a step ahead of him (climbing through the Himalaya mountains with apparent ease), but the action inevitably leads to a showdown between two armies of mummies in a Chinese desert. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor has a lot to offer: a supporting cast that includes the elegant Michelle Yeoh, Russell Wong, and Liam Cunningham, the unexpected appearance of several Yeti, and a climactic battle sequence that is nightmarishly weird but compelling. On the downside, the charm so desperately sought in romantic relationships, as well as comic turns by John Hannah (as Evelyn's rascal brother), is not only absent but often annoying. Rarely have witty asides in the thick of battle been more unwelcome in a movie. Glad i bought it since i wanted to see it all through. But a little disappointed in how it was put together

Highlights:
•pretty well structured backstory (albeit, a pretty typical one) for current mummy character with great dialogue, well built characters and seemingly great imagery for the period clothes.
•Michelle Yeoh is an AMAZING actress! We do not deserve her! Also, without her filling the role she had, i don't think the back story would have flowed so well.
•Liam Cunningham. Also a great actor, Hard not to have an appreciation of him all out angry and wanting to teach someone a lesson in whatever character he takes.
•honestly, the who bad guy cast was pretty bomb, hard not to enjoy them doing what they do, whether making me as the viewer hate than, or secretly want to take them out drinking.
•they gave us a car chase, as is tradition

Lowlights:
•Actress swap w no story correction to accommodate- rude!
•WHYYY was the digital work absolut poop? The budget for this movie was 145million!!! I mean, compared to the first movie in the series (80mil), shouldn't that come to better grafic results? Especially so many years later with better means in to do such stuff??

•Yetis... one is generally strange to throw in there, but they decided more is good.
•personal pet peeve, but the (metal) horses? The curse was literally for the army, people willingly following the emperor and turning all his followers into terracotta. Why the horses??? Also, they were obviously copper. Annoying!

Film critic Roger Ebert hails THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR as the best of this series, and I guess that's why we have opinions. I happen to think that this third entry, while somewhat entertaining, is not as good as the first two films, not even close. This series, obviously more inspired by the Indiana Jones franchise than the Boris Karloff stuff, has never had the resonance or the pure rush of high adventure which made the first three Indy Jones flicks so memorable. And yet TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR has echoes of what I liked about the first two Mummy films. It's a silly movie, but it knows it's silly and invites you to embrace its campiness. Me, I liked the ride, up to a point.

Catching up with the O'Connells: It's 1946, and Rick and Evelyn O'Connell have fallen into a dreaded state, that of staid domesticity. Their adventuring days well behind them, Rick now whiles his time in incompetent fly-fishing, while Evie's writing career has stalled on writer's block. Oh, and their romance has gone in the way of "meh..." So how can't they help but perk up when the British Foreign Office offers them a mission of couriering a sacred relic back to the Chinese people. So off they go.

Seems to me that this particular mummy menace can be blamed on Rick and Evie's rebellious 20-year-old son Alex. Boy's followed his mother's scholarly ways and has become an archaeologist. And, even if he doesn't do the actual resurrecting, it's Alex who in China unearths the 2000-year-old Emperor and his army of terra-cotta warriors. Alex may not get on well with his dad, but, still, when an ancient evil warlord returns to life and dreams again of conquest, it's nice that one's parents have experience with stopping that sort of thing.

There may not be any pyramids in this one, but there are still tombs and sarcophagi. Perhaps to reinvigorate this series, the venue and mythology shift from Egypt to China, and, so, we get dragons and wushu, Shangri-La and yetis in the frozen Himalayas (who evidently are down with American football). The film also offers the possible (but kinda sketchy) origin of the Great Wall of China. But you know what? I miss the mummy Imhotep and I miss Oded Fehr as the grim, face-tattooed warrior who guards against the mummy's awakening. And I really miss Rachel Weisz. The quite unexpected choice to fill in as Evie is American actress Maria Bello and she actually does a fair job. But, no, it's not the same. On the other hand, Brendan Fraser is back as Rick O'Connell, and he's still got that affable, big lug charm. John Hannah is the other returnee, as Evie's greedy but likable brother Jonathan. Jonathan is now a thriving nightclub owner in Shanghai, which is very good news for the plot. He's still the predominant comic foil, which is one more dead horse these filmmakers don't mind beating.

Another thing to tsk tsk about is that the movie doesn't take full advantage of the martial arts talents of Eastern icons Michelle Yeoh and Jet Li. Jet Li is particularly wasted, as his character is mostly camouflaged in CG effects. I'll yell it to the world, brother: Jet Li, being already a human highlight, does NOT need CG effects! At least, in THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM, Jet Li has a fantastic one-off with Jackie Chan. And it would've been nice if Yeoh's character, the immortal sorceress Zi Yuan, had been allowed a reunion moment with her dead General, but the film was too eager to get to the two undead armies engaging in the fighty fight already. It's also a bit ironic that TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR came out the same summer as the fourth Indiana Jones, of that franchise this Mummy series has strived to emulate (but never quite surpassed). And like THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL, there's an annoying youngster trying to upstage the old bull. Luke Ford plays Rick and Evie's son Alex with the appeal of someone clinically dead. This guy has zero chemistry with absolutely everyone and everything in this film. I guess it's a truimph of sorts that I don't find Alex as exasperating as Shia LeBeouf's Mutt (don't get me started on that vine swinging %$##).

This one simply lacks the scale, romance and panache (okay, campy panache) of the first two Mummy films. Coming out the same summer as IRON MAN, HELLBOY 2, DARK KNIGHT and, dammit, yes, even MAMMA MIA, TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR never really stood a chance. Factor in the stale storytelling, the lame dialogue, Rachel Weisz's absence, and the misuse of Jet Li and, well, you can see why Weisz chose not to dig up her role again. As for Brendan Fraser, he's a nice guy but I wouldn't be surprised if he's up for sequels to MONKEYBONE or BEDAZZLED.

I generally like these movies, all out action, short on story and even logic. Where does this stand for me ?
Simply put, I enjoyed this,its a roller coaster movie.
Is it as good as the first 2 Mummy movies? No, when are sequels better than originals - not too often.
Is this any good ? Yes. Its a fun ride for 100 minutes. This time it's a Mummy from Shangri-La. There are some cool CGI SPFX -of monsters and Yeti and the action is more or less non stop. Jet Li becoming a 3 headed dragon and some other monster is very cool, the SPFX were great here. It is the same formula as the first 2 Mummy movies, witty dialog (some of the lines come up short) and just a lot of explosions and effects. The acting is perfectly fine for a movie like this. The love interest is non existent. It doesn't need to be the big story in this kind of movie. This is a movie that is meant to entertain you with action and effects, not to be a downer with a sad ending, not about love. The characters were all good enough for this kind of picture. And boy does this deliver, which is why I gave it 4 stars. It did what it set out to do entertain you with non stop action- 4 stars for a movie of this sort. Leave your brains at the door when you watch this, this is just to sit back and enjoy.
These movies remind me so much of Indiana Jones that I wish Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser would team up to fight a Mummy with a treasure thrown in. If you liked the first 2 Mummy movies and Indiana Jones movies then this most likely wont disappoint you,as long as you are expecting fast paced non stop action and a lot of effects.

I have to give credit for the idea of using ancient China as the backdrop, the Egyptian mythology was quickly growing tiresome. But this is not how to do it. An utter mess is the only way to describe the execution. Our beloved archaeologists and treasure hunters have been tasked with one final mission, to deliver the "Eye of Shangri-la" to China. Alas, a faction of devoted soldiers wish to resurrect their lost emperor from the dead...and so we have a "Mummy" movie. I have too many gripes with this, so let me get the positives out of the way. Plenty of mindless action, Brendan Fraser is so damn likeable (I seriously miss him...), good father and son onscreen chemistry and Michelle Yeoh is always a plus. Those are the four points that this film earns. Now...onto the negatives! I noticed a small little detail that was missing...Rachel Weisz. Maria Bello, I'm sorry, you did your best but Weisz just cannot be replaced. Jet Li was wasted and had no charisma. The script was completely mediocre where the humour was injected into every other line, as if I was watching a classic 70s adventure film. Know your current audience Gough and Millar, because this sucked and was hugely unfunny. Rachel Weisz isn't in this. The visual effects for the most part were average, however the first use of it was horrendous. You know the scene...Jet Li melting and solidifying into a terracotta statue. Urghhh was painful to watch. Blowing up an ancient Tibetan monastery as a 'Plan B' is immoral and culturally despicable (someone give me a Nobel Peace prize!). Rachel Weisz isn't in this. Yetis? Really...YETIS!? We're going there are we? Might as well have a three headed dragon whilst we're at it...oh...never mind. You're wondering what I'm getting at right? The fantasy elements were just stupid. Didn't work, at all. That pretty much describes this film, stupid and unnecessary. I suppose it's an easy watch though...if nothing else was on.

this episode in Brendan Fraser's Mummy trilogy met with a poor critical response, & although I have seen much worse films out there. I can see why. Firstly I will mention the performances that seem a little deflated from previous films. The lack of Rachael Weisz is very much a sore point, Maria Bello doesn't quite cut it as the same character & they should have written it as a new character and writen out the Eveyln character somehow rather than have Bello put on a foney British accent that makes her sound slow & wooden. Then there's Alex the pairs son who's Aussie accent slips in on occasion & he doesn't truly come across as the action type. Even Brendan Fraser's performance seems muted as if he's only in it for the pay cheque & kinda bored. Jet Li isn't used much either with a huge chunk of his role a cgi character, others are very much on the hammy side.. The action is all ok for a Mummy flick & so far much of cgi holds up ok. I don't really get why this film was made as it was sometime since themummy returns & I doubt that people were calling for another mummy film. Not only that the original director and female lead didn't turn up to the party either. I did find myself pottering about for things to do while watching the film & my following of the story fell victim to that concentration lapse. I don't know if due to that or if a fault of the film but I didn't quite understand what The Dragon Emperor's motivs was, as he didn't seem to do a whole lot & then was killed. like I said before it ain't so bad & there are worse movies out there but of all the mummy films feturing Brendan Fraser this is the runt of the litter.

Dissapointing sequel, entertaining nevertheless.

Stephen Sommers is not the best directors at work in hollywood, he isn't even one of the best but with the first two Mummy films he delivered thrilling action spectacles with some gripping set pieces and decent special effects. The first two boasted some levels of character development, great acting, coherent plots and plenty of thrills. However, it seems that with the departure of Sommers in the directors role (he is here assigned as a producer) the franchise has taken a bit of a nose dive. Rob Cohen helms this third film in the franchise and whilst he doesn;t do a terrible job he doesn't do a very good job either. His handling of the action, specifically the fight scenes between Jet Li and Brendan Fraser, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, are somewhat disjointed and blink and you'll miss it - which is unfortunate because the martial arts could have made this movie a very worthy succesor to its two predecessors.
The cast also suffers a bit of a blow, though not as much as the direction. Fraser returns in a somewhat weaker role than before, and Rachael Weisz is unfortunately absent being replaced by Maria Bello who, whilst beautiful and talented, can't match Weisz's acting skills and her undeniable beauty. Arnold Vosoloo is not the eponymous mummy here and the legend is changed to be a chinese warlord who awakens to bring about the end of the world. Jet Li takes the role of the mummy here, and whilst his martial arts skills are brilliant he is vastly underused and at times looks like he doesn't want to be there. Another dissapointment is John Hannah's role that has been reduced to nothing more than comic relief, and because he has been saddled with some cheesy one liners and poor jokes he is underused and at times rather pointless.
As for the special effects, they have improved upon the Mummy and The Mummy Returns, but even then they appear too glossy and perfect, not gritty or realistic enough and the yeti's were not a good choice of creature to include.
Desite the problems i have listed above, this film is very entertaining. There is plenty of action and adventure, far off locations and some interesting sets. The final battle between a zombie army and terracota warriors is thrilling and a great climax.
See this if you enjoyed the first two but don't expect it to be as good as them. This 1 disc edition, for those interested, is not a good choice if you are looking for special features, they are extremelt poor. The steelbook edition is the choice for those wanting featurettes and the like and the luxury box set is even better if you're a die hard fan. If you're only interested in the film, get this.

The first two Mummy movies weren't the best thing in the world, but Sommers and Fraser gave the movies the desperate edge that they needed. Unfortunately, despite the sound plot, and the flowing narrative, the film just feels desperate.

Like the same years Indiana Jones movie, this three-quel feels like its trying to pass the torch to Alex, in order to restart the franchise for a new audience, and it just tries too hard. Fraser is as good as ever, Bello is a wonderful replacement for Wiesz, but the chemistry is lacking between the leads.

Hannah goes full bonkers as Jonathan, cranking up the hilarious sidekick knob to eleven, and spoiling the charm he had in the previous entries, and the biggest mistake is that Li is totally wasted in his role. Had he not been CGI for the majority, it could have been a lot more tense, but it's a special effects movie, so what can you do.

But it's still fun, it's just missing a the chemistry between the cast that the first two had.

its very hard to say about this film, as it was just so different to the mummy 1 and 2 , in 1 and 2 it was all about the same mummy really. imhotep. but in this its a bit of a culture shock the fact where in a new country and its about a new mummy. a completely different story in everyway! so after you get over the major shock, it really is a wonderfull film. its a good length too so your not left wishing there was more. it doesnt require a sequal, they realy did do this film and finish it well not leaving you wondering what was going to happen next. from dead armys of thousands, to magic yeti's, avalanches and a pool of eternal youth this film really is brilliant.

BUT Eve is a different women in this, which to you mummy fans like myself i found heartbreaking it just isnt the same without her. so it takes a few watches to be ok with it. its probably why its set in a different country also, because having a new eve in egypt would have deffinately been to much to handle as even this takes a while.
yet with all that i would still recommend this film because brilliant even with new characters ...
