Product Description

Munchkin 4 – The Need for Steed is the third expansion for the original Munchkin – 112 more John Kovalic-illustrated cards for killing monsters, stealing treasure, and backstabbing your fellow players. This set introduces Steeds, the trusty mounts of legend . . . Oh, wait – this is Munchkin. So these Steeds include not just the Dragon and the Tiger, but the Giant Mutant Gerbil (drawn by guest artist Shaenon K. Garrity of Narbonic), the Chicken, and Big Joe, who might be a Steed or might be a Hireling. It's hard to tell. Hireling? Yes indeed, The Need for Steed has lots and lots of Hirelings, who look quite a bit like Sidekicks from Super Munchkin, or Minions from Munchkin Bites. Add these valuable characters to your retinue, use their special abilities, and sacrifice them without a thought to save your own skin. Or, better yet, kill somebody else's Hireling. That's the way a Munchkin does it. Feel the need . . . The Need for Steed. Now in Full Color.

This add-on definitely improves the original Munchkin! It contains sidekicks like an elf sidekick and dwarf sidekick who can use race-specific items and take some devices off your hands (literally!). It also has modifiers like High and Dark (high elf, dark wizard...) which can be used ALONG WITH race cards (dark characters gain a level when bad stuff happens to other characters, which adds a fun dimension). The other notable addition is the steeds, "items" which you can ride for as much as a +5 bonus with the all-powerful Dragon Steed. There's the perpetually terrified Chicken Steed, 9-Lived Tiger Steed, Giant Mutant Gerbil, and plenty of others. Plus, all the cards have that brilliant Munchkin humor. Since this repairs the race and hand restrictions in original Munchkin, I'd definitely suggest getting this one, even if it's the only add-on pack you collect!

Munchkin is an awesome game. The original set is great fun by itself. Whacky, irreverent, fast-paced, did I mention awesome? You need Munchkin.

But if you buy Munchkin, you ought to seriously consider buying Munchkin 4: The Need for Steed. Why, you ask? Because unlike the first two expansions (2 & 3), Munchkin 4 introduces two new aspects to the game: Hirelings and Steeds. Hirelings are similar to NPCs in traditional role-playing games. Your buddies who fight alongside you that are not controlled by another player. Steeds are, well, animals you ride. (But you knew that already, what, I'm a dictionary?) Both basically give you more bonuses to your character, to increase your combat strength and your overall satisfaction with the game, life, the universe, and everything. (Wait, slipping into a Doug Adams review now. Sorry.)

Munchkin 4 also has a lot of new cards. More is better. Munchkin is awesome. That is all.

I originally wrote this review for Munchkin 4 The Need For Steed. So, please excuse me if you read it twice (but, I thought I'd include it here as well since I didn't know where folks would start).

The Need for Steed is a 112 card expansion for the Fantasy Munchkin theme. It contains 78 door cards and 34 treasure cards. It does not introduce any new classes or races, but it does introduce steeds (which are big items that carry themselves and have some sort off special ability). This is an interesting addition to the game. You don't need a ton of expansions to get the most out of the base game, but the base game and least two are definitely worthwhile investment.

As noted in my other reviews, I own all of the Fantasy Munchkin expansions, and if I were to recommend an order to get the most new variety for your dollar, this one would be near the bottom of the list (still worthwhile, but there are several that I'd get before this one). Instead, I would suggest Munchkin Clerical Errors as it adds a race and a class, followed by Munchkin 8 Half Horse, Will Travel Card Game as it adds two races and three race/class enhancers, followed by whichever ones that are most interesting to you after that.

If you've never played Munchkin before then you are missing one amazing game! It's tons of fun. Like a role playing card game packed with weirdness and humor. It's great for parties or if you've been waiting for a good game for your weekly game night with friends. Great for those of us with slightly dark and wacky senses of humor. This is fantastic if you love the original. Tons of great steeds and Minions!! The Mutant Gerbil is my favorite!

Munchkin is a great card game to play with the whole family. It is a parody on those role playing games. It incorporates all kinds of animated fantasy, like elves, dwarves, orcs, and dragons. This game may be somewhat complicated to learn, but it is a lot of fun.
