Each card contains its own set of rules that affect game play, so each card contains (often substantial) text.
The game is fairly flexible in terms of the number of players it can accommodate, but somewhere between 3-5 is probably best. If you stick to those numbers, a game will usually take around 30-45 minutes.
This set CANNOT be played as a standalone game but is rather a (Lovecraft themed) expansion to the original Munchkin Cthulhu core set (although it is also compatible with any of the many Munchkin sets and expansions).
Overall, the play is very fun, portable, fast-paced, and often amusing.
This expansion adds a number of amusing cards to incorporate additional variations and twists on the game, including the addition of a new type of over-sized card that serves as a specialized "dungeon" for engaging in combat. These over-sized cards are a welcome addition, although their impact on game play isn't especially substantial.
Note that this particular expansion set, like its core game counterpart, is Lovecraft themed -- in other words, if the player doesn't enjoy (or won't understand) Cthulhu or Great Old One jokes, you are better off getting a different set of Munchkin cards (Star Munchkin for sci-fi fans, Conan Munchkin for fantasy fans, etc).
OVERALL SCORE: B+
While a dungeon card is in play, it affects ALL the players unless the Portal that sent you there (see below for Portals) says otherwise.
Some dungeons will let you gain levels for entering, leaving, or doing certain things. These level increases cannot give you the winning level unless (of cores) the card says you can.
Yes, you can be in more than one Dungeon at the same time.
Setting Up the Dungeons
The Dungeon cads are separated in there own deck. Start the game with one Dungeon card face-up.
This is the Dungeon that you are currently in. To choose the starting Dungeon you can either:
(1) Pick one at random (top card)
(2) Let the player who one the last game pick, or the loser of the last game
(3) Just agree on one you all like.
However you decide the first Dungeon card, you most shuffle the rest, and place face-down ready for the moment the munchkins stumble through a Portal...
Portals are Doors...vary special Doors. All the Door cards in this deck are Portals.
When you draw a portal face up, you must immediately follow its instructions. you may enter a new Dungeon, with or without leaving the old one. you can (as I have said above) be in more than one Dungeon at the same time. After you have followed the Portal's instructions, draw another face-up Door.
When you draw a Portal card face DOWN, you have a choice:
(1) Turn it face up immediately and follow the instructions, draw another face-DOWN Door
(2) Put it in your hand.Read more ›
