Greetings, holiday movie fans and culture lovers, I am the Great Gonzo...or, as I am better known to fans of this classic motion picture -- literary legend Charles Dickens. Ready to laugh, cry, sing, frolic, cavort and enjoy yourself beyond belief!? As the title suggests, this is a Muppet version of the classic Dickens story. What makes this a little different is the mixture of Muppets and Humans in the same story. Scrooge is played by Michael Caine and human actors portray Scrooge's nephew, neice-in-law and other characters. The rest are portrayed by Muppets. Some are familiar (Kermit as Bob Cratchit, Gonzo as Charles Dickens and Statler & Waldorf as the ghosts of "The Marley Brothers") and some are brand new characters (such as the Christmas Ghosts).
The genius step in this movie was Michael Caine portraying Scrooge in a totally serious manner. His version of Scrooge is just as good as any other portrayal you've seen. The only difference is that he has a talking frog and talking rats working for him. There is plenty of humor too, so it all balances out nicely. This was the first major Muppet project to take place after Jim Henson's untimely death, so it was nice to see that they could still pull off a good movie. Paul Williams wrote the songs just like he did for the very first Muppet Movie, so that helps to make it very enjoyable as well.
The package is fine. I got the Red Sleeve package, but when the sleeve is removed, it's the "It's not Easy being Scrooge" package released in 2015. For those of you curious about the cut "The Love we Lost" song performed by Belle, it's not in this package. That cut is only available on VHS or Disney + Streaming. Even so, for those who like physical media, this is still a good version to have. Picture and sound are all very good. Special features are standard aspect and not in high definition, but they're still fine.
Highly recommended for fans of both The Muppets and A Christmas Carol. This will quickly become an annual viewing tradition if it's not already.
Apparently they deconstructed and changed something so that the UHD version is not viewable on HD.
Obviously we discovered this in the first 20 seconds of the movie and immediately stopped it hoping for a simple exchange for the HD version.
Still trying to find a way to accomplish that goal but others need to be aware if you do not have a UHD system you may not want to purchase UHD materials.

We watch this every Christmas, and for the price it's on sale, we now definitely have it for good. Enough worrying about whether it won't be shown on TV or only available on disney+, I have the DVD and need fret not!
You don't need to be a muppets fan to enjoy this movie. They combine so well with Michael Caine (the only human in the village), to make his a memorable, touching and warm viewing pleasure - like a welcoming winter fire in the depths of winter. Caine's performance is excellent. Based on the Dickens novel, it's a story about a 'scrooge' who has his eyes opened to what he has become, and how redemption is possible, even if you've really become a horrible person. There's hope for us all! Some ghosts may be a little scary for younger children, so I'd recommend this for 5+. Enjoy, it's impossible not to! And Happy Christmas, one and all!
We had this on VHS before and so didn't get the extras (the bloopers are a must see) however a bit gutted that they cut down on one song and edited out another altogether - hence 4 stars for this DVD not the 5 stars that the film in its entirety really deserves.
All-in-all I would strongly recommend this for all the family, old or young! :)
