An established must-read romance author, Maggie Bishop has crossed into the mystery genre with finesse. Her latest novel is packed with suspense around a tightly-woven plot which begins with the poisoning of dogs and escalates to the murder of a local man. Throughout, she deliciously teases the reader with the bristly attraction between the investigating detective and the woman who found the man's body and who just might be a suspect. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Boone, North Carolina, with engaging characters, red herrings at every turn, and a galvanizing story line, this is a must-have, must-read. Highly recommended.
Maggie Bishop does a great job of bringing a story home with her diverse set of characters. Reading Murder at Blue Falls made me feel like I was there in Boone, NC talking with the town's people. Her descriptions of the North Carolina, Appalachian Mts. are breathtaking. And why wouldn't they be? Maggie Bishop writes with extreme expertise using her own personal experiences. It was a fun read sure to put a smile on your face during any rainy afternoon or during the quiet times when the house is empty. I highly recommend it.
But Maggie Bishop's excellent writing, and her poetic depiction of the magnificent Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina where the story is set, are so accomplished the reader is swept up in the mysterious crimes and finds herself rooting for Jemma, for her spunk and courage, even as she becomes one of the suspects of the murder! Its refreshing to meet a heroine who is not perfect. Jemma has a former DUI charge on her record (intimations of a troubled past?) and when the attractive but irritating Detective Tucker enters the story, there is that old male-female attraction-repulsion. Until a kidnapper appears to protect his secrets and nabs Jemma. The plot deepens.
I have read other of Bishop's books and this is her most accomplished so far. Its a page-turner, with unexpected hairpin turns, each scene building upon the suspense that went before. Agatha Christie-style, numerous suspects are woven into the story, enticing the reader before the real killer reveals himself. Intrigue and sub-plots abound! I understand the mystery-genre is new for Bishop and I applaud her style. The novel is suspenseful, the plot is tight. The landscape is described so poetically the reader comes alive to the smells and scents of the beautiful North Carolina landscape.
Most intriguing is the tension between Jemma and Detective Tucker. She is strong but feminine, he is strong and masculine. They are attracted. One hopes they will appear together again soon. MURDER AT BLUE FALLS is a page-turner. A great series-starter and I am looking forward to the next book. Congratulations!
