After he handled a hostage negotiation that went wrong, Boston Police Detective, Mike Kelly, transfers to homicide. In the first book of a new series, Kelly works with Detective Kristen Barnes to solve the murder of a teenager. Kelly and Barnes will have to investigate people on both the good and the bad sides of the law and it will not be an easy case...
This was a fast-paced book that built up the excitement levels early in the story. There were times when the anticipation had my heart racing as I read on. I really could not pick out a guilty person, so I redoubled my efforts. There were twists I did not see coming and the ending was a complete shocker! I had an idea that the person named must be guilty of something, but the big reveal completely blew my mind — I had no idea!
AfterThought: I knew this was a series and I thoroughly enjoyed the ending. I am reaching for BLEEDING BLUE right now...
I really like police procedurals and this book hit the right notes. I can’t remember which author I read that suggested these books, but it was another author I like, so I trusted his judgment. Glad I did.
There is a series Mr. Shea already had out, five books I think, I have put those on my Kindle now as well. I look forward to digging into this series. The character’s name is Nick Lawrence. Something to look forward too.
I read a lot of books, and I love when I find a new go to author. To me that means an author I pre-order his or her books automatically. Mr. Shea is now on that list.
Great characters, interesting story, and a book that keeps me turning the pages. I highly recommend this series.
I can easily recommend this book, as well as all of Mr Shea’s works.
With that out of the way, I am shocked as to how much I liked MB! It was realistic, gritty, and vivid. The book wasn't overly long, throwing in unnecessary filler or sub-plots, making the pacing comfortable throughout. The characters weren't complex, the story straightforward, and it takes place in Boston which is nice that The Town is getting some attention.
Since I'm giving MB five starts does that mean it's a perfect book, or even the best in the genre I've read? Uh, not exactly. I'd give this book a solid 4.5 stars, but rounded up because I didn't have any objective reasons to mark it down. The police procedure was detailed to a fault, with a few minor exceptions, and it would've been more fun for me if Michael Kelly was a hockey fan instead of boxing, but I guess hockey isn't very Irish so I'll just have to get reacquainted with boxing terminology it seems.
I've already ordered the second book in this series, and if you're a fan of murder mystery/thriller I'd highly recommend giving this a read, especially if you already checked out Brian Shea's other series.
