First, I am probably biased because this is set in a time and place that has interested me since watching "For Whom the Bell Tolls" repeatedly as a kid with my right-wing-but-big-Gary Cooper-fan dad. That having been said, I found this to be a well-written, fast-paced murder mystery that captures (maybe rightly, maybe wrongly--I wasn't there, so quien sabe--but in any case movingly) the period. Despite the fact that it presents a one-sided, totally negative view of the Right and in the end Ruiz opts for the Left (Remember my right-wing dad? Well, the political apple didn't fall far from the tree!), I truly enjoyed it--it was $0.99 well-spent, and would have been $9.99 well-spent--and I intend to buy and read the entire series.

A good mystery set in Spain during the period leading up to the Spanish Civil War. The main protagonist is a police investigator trying to work amidst chaos, danger, apathy, conflicting politics and people who don't want the job done at all. He ends up supporting the Republican side by default as none of the others appeal to him at all. Even so, the author gives readers a pretty balanced view of Spain in chaos. Here is a quote from the book:

"Paco drained his glass, and the girl filled it again. ‘If we take the left for a start,’ he said. ‘The socialists want the government to control everything, the anarchists want the government to control nothing, and the communists want whatever it is that Moscow wants.’ ‘What about the right wing?’ ‘The Carlists, who are led by Calvo Sotelo, want a return to the last-but-one ruling monarchy. The Catholic parties want the Church to be part of the State like it used to be. The Falange wants a mass movement which will follow it unquestioningly, and the big landowners want the government to keep the peasants in line.’ ‘What about the army?’ ‘The army wants to see order. And the government – which is liberal – can’t even keep itself in order."

They find her handbag and she has no type of ID or travel papers. After they returned to the precinct. The next day they get the autopsy report they still have no name but they get a clothing label from a coutour clothing designer that only the very elite women could aford. While trying to research how the girl had gotten the exspensive clothing their lives and their country Spain would be upended by era.

This is the story of a determined policeman investigating the murder of a country girl of little value to the powers that be in a country bordering on revolution. Although I had trouble getting interested in this story, I was determined not to put it away. I’m glad I persevered, because it turned out to be a good read. I’ve not read anything about Spain in the 1930’s, but I imagine that this is a pretty good representation of a nation on the brink. The main characters are fairly well developed. I don’t feel like I particularly like or dislike any of them, but I understood their behavior. I’m told that good investigation is plodding determination, and this investigation plods along. Don’t expect a quick moving, action- packed story. On the other hand, this is worth the time.

This is not my usual read. But it engaged me. The protagonist, Paco, a dedicated policeman in Madrid, Spain, at the beginning of a Spanish Civil War, is determined to solve the murder of a campesina, a young country girl. The case pits him against powerful, rich politicos, but he doggedly persists. The author vividly, almost brutally, drags the reader through pain, anguish and bittersweet success. The ending left me sad for the shattered ideals and grim outlook of the disillusioned hero. The writing was brilliant. I give 4 stars, because I prefer a happy ending, but I applaud the truth of the story.

A young woman is found murdered in a Havana park. The protagonist a police detective trying to do his job while avoiding political entanglements. Of course during a revolution no one avoids political entanglements, and even what seems like a random murder has to be bound up with them. That is the substance of this novel. The writing is good, the plot unfolds naturally, and the characters believable. Not a masterpiece, but a solid well-written story!

Easy to make a false assumption before reading this excellent book. The core plot has the murder of a young woman investigated by an honest cop who battles against the rich and powerful who simply don’t care. Nothing new there? That’s the false assumption. What is very different is that the cop, Paco Ruiz, is based in Madrid and the storyline takes place between March and July 1936. This is on the brink of the Spanish Civil War, a fierce and truly awful conflict when friends and neighbours became sworn enemies, and the right and the left killed one another sometimes because they didn’t wear the right kind of clothes. All of this makes the background interesting and the interplay of characters fascinating and compelling. This very well written book is the first in a series and I have just ordered the second, “The General’s Dog”, with yet more available. Recommended to all who like good crime fiction, especially those who want transporting to somewhere other than the UK and the US, and not to be missed by anyone interested in that particularly unhappy conflict.

The synopsis tells all that is needed. A refreshingly different semi historical crime fiction book. The 1936 settings are really well done..I found myself rereading my history books on the Spanish Civil War. There is such a strong build up in the tensions between so many factions; the descriptions of friendships being torn apart ; random violence amongst everyday Madrid street life ; the extremes of wealth and poverty.

The political pressures are also well shown . Cleverly,I think, the author moves the action to Seville which gives the story a greater overall depth. I am looking forward to reading further books in this series. A thought provoking and first class read.

Two story lines running parallel and a well drawn main character make this worthy, in my opinion ,of the 4 stars given. A good murder mystery set just as Spain is about to implode. Having spent a fair amount of time in Spain I've always been fascinated by its history, particularly the era of the civil war, but never really understood the politics. Even though this is a work of fiction it has given me an insight into the origins of the tragic events and catastrophic aftermath. Not a novel to tax the brain, just enjoyable reading if the subjects of crime and Spain are of interest. In some ways the hero, Paco, puts me in mind of a Spanish Jack Reacher. 🤔

I was looking for a lockdown read about Spanish history and just came across this book. Paco is a determined detective with right on his side, his oppo is his less determined but paco feeds off this. You can almost smell the tension in the capitals streets on the eve of the civil war, I have been to both madrid and sevilla so for me it gave a great insight to how it would have been. A great read that gathered pace right from the off. I'll defo buy the next book.

Set just before the civil war started in 1936. Captures the sights, sounds and smells of Spain. The bar culture - the drinking and the tapas. Good mystery with a romantic liasion for the policeman. Some of it stretches your credulity, but this doesn't detract from the overall impression that this is a good thriller with a believable and sympathetic police inspector who is determined to find out why the girl had to die. Will definitely read the other two currently in the series. Thanks.
