Out in the middle of nowhere in the Great Plains of the United States, it doesn’t matter where you are, really, or even what year it is. All that matters is whether you have enough to eat before the winter sets in.

Whether your family loves you or shuns you, and whether or not you have a way to keep from going mad, those things don’t matter so much.

The girl has little else but stories.

But the main problem is that her mother is going mad, mad in a way that wrecks the lives and sanity of everyone around her, and may even warp reality itself. The house creaks and groans and twists, as the corruption consumes everyone—almost everyone—within.

It's not everyday that crows are given voice, but I think it's fair that doing so has now been done. It's not everyday that crows are the glue that holds seventeen tales in a firm clasp, enchanting a reader while sticking them to the pages cemented so. I find myself mourning the lost crows, and wondering if a fridge will truly hold enough warmth despite the protest of the wicked winds.

I like this book. I like this book a lot. So I thought I'd write a strange review to say precisely that. I like this book, this book I like. Very much so. Which rhymes with crow.

In all seriousness, buy this book because you'll be glad you did. I am, and until now I can't remember the last time I was glad for anything.

The story moves quick and the connecting narrative bolsters and enhances the internal stories (no mean feat if you are familiar with the conceit). This is a scary collection of short stories cleverly designed to put your imagination into overdrive. The stories are gathered together by a flock of crows, which is a horror story unto itself. I don't think I'll ever look at those birds quite the same way again. Definitely need to read this collection a second time.
