This is a tightly written, well rounded, good characterization, excellent mystery. I'm sorry I missed book one of the series. You can bet I'll be getting that one next. For those readers who are especially drawn to series, this book stood on its own as a story. And there was just enough background from book one to clue you into the main character, without boring you. Highly recommend this book.
I enjoyed reuniting with Kayla, Steven, Emily and my favorite Natalia as they searched to find out the ghost's identity and how to placate it. Throw in an international smuggling ring, an aging movie star and an Interpol snitch and you have a read that is both exciting and fun.
I look forward to the next book in this series.
There's less travelogue in this novel than the first in the series because much of its action takes place on the ship -- where the ghost hangs out. Instead of descriptions of scenery and sites, Rapp blends a murder mystery plot with a paranormal storyline.
Emily Schultz, the president of Constellation Cruise Lines, has discovered that the Sea Mist, a ship she recently acquired for the line, harbors a ghost that's given to violent temper tantrums, and she asks Kayla to help her. Assisted by Natalia Baliskov, an entertainer who performs a psychic act in the ship's theater, and Stephen Young, Kayla starts by trying to find out who the ghost once was.
She believes the woman was a passenger on the Sea Mist several years before who jumped overboard. When the ghost begins communicating with her by transmitting images from her final days, Kayla learns that the woman was, in fact, pushed to her death and is trying to prevent another murder on the ship.
In less skilled hands, this ghostly communication could have been pretty hokey, but Rapp makes it work by having Kayla empathize with the other woman's plight.
In the course of the investigation, one character after another falls under suspicion until the mystery wraps up in the final pages. And dovetailing with the murder mystery storyline is a subplot involving an international smuggling operation. When Kayla's not tracking the ghost's murderer, she helps Steven, who is now her fiancé, determine how the smugglers are distributing their loot and who heads the operation.
My only reservation concerns Kayla's romance with Steven; this courtship goes much too smoothly. More uncertainty about the new relationship and more roadblocks to happiness over the course of several books would have ramped up the tension and given Kayla another opportunity to show her strength and resourcefulness.
But, on the whole, Murder on a Ghost Ship is a good read that has me looking forward to the next book in the series that will feature a wedding cruise to Alaska.
I wonder who'll be getting married?
The supernatural twist in this book is well-played. The ghost of a passenger murdered on a previous cruise haunts the Sea Mist. And Emily, the President of Constellation Cruise Lines, may lose her job if she can't show this spook the door--and quickly. Soon the young old gang is back: adorable Kayla...sexy psychic Natalia...and Steven, Kayla's fiance and intrepid Interpol cop.
This author could charge for lessons in series standalone tactics. She reintroduces her characters and their back stories with dazzling ease. And in her expert hands 'escapist entertainment' means not escaping from but escaping to a wonderfully ordered and beautiful world where wrongs are corrected by people we love in stouthearted, imaginative ways.
This is one of favorite new series. And I do hope this author will put on some speed in getting out the third.
