Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I have a weakness for mysteries, specifically mysteries set in England. I've always enjoyed tales of stalwart Scotland Yard inspectors, clever detectives headquartered in London, and even blue-haired old dears who solve murders by seeing the world through the filter of their archetypal English villages. I'm also a fan of English mystery films and television series, from Commander Gideon to Inspector Morse to Midsomer Murders. My detective for this series, DCI Arthur Ravyn, and its location, Hammershire County, came into being separately. Ravyn has been floating in and out of my consciousness for years under various names. Gradually, he took shape in my mind, all his strengths and foibles, and eventually he acquired his name and backstory. Hammershire County first appeared in "The Woods, the Watcher & the Warding," a story that appeared in Sherlock Holmes: Cthulhu Mythos Adventures. It was a properly spooky place, full of isolated villages and ancient secrets. When it came time to tell DCI Ravyn's story, I decided there would be no better place for him to ply his trade than Hammershire. As to this first story in the series, it has also been in my mind for years, essentially the event of a man stumbling into the snug bar of a pub after visiting an ancient megalith and dying. In the end, I merged event, detective and location to create Murder in the Goblins' Playground.

From the Inside Flap

An Ancient Evil Awakening...For thousands of years, the ancient megaliths known as the Goblins' Playground lay outside the village of Ashford, at the dark heart of Red Cap Woods. Both ruins and woods were avoided by villagers at night, as they had been since the time of the Romans. Occasionally, some foolish youth would rise to the dare, venture into the darkness to touch the stones as a rite of passage, but most only lingered at the boundary of the woods long enough to make a claim no one really believed. As was often true in myth-haunted Hammershire County, the stone possessed evil reputations, garnered through generations of rumour and innuendo, but hard to justify otherwise. When Allan Cutter, village reprobate and bully, is murdered in the lee of the old stones, generations of repressed dread return. The villagers are sure an ancient evil played a part in his death, a belief reinforced when others die, linked by a skein that runs through Red Cap Woods and the Goblins' Playground. Detective Chief Inspector Arthur Ravyn, however, suspects evil of a more recent vintage. Though a life-long resident of Hammershire, well-steeped in the region's dark lore by a legion of aunts and great-aunts, he knows that when it comes to murder, people rarely need the assistance of ghosts or goblins. But, then, this is Hammershire County, where the past often seems to intrude upon the present and old things refuse to die.
