Cole Lockland is Harley’s best friend. He has found a position for Harley with Cordelia Silvers of the Silvers Finders Agency. Her first job is to figure out why someone broke into Mr. Bellman’s jewelry shop and left a doru (a Japanese doll). It was left as a warning. Harley goes home with Cordelia and accidentally drops the doru (thank goodness it was just a fake). Inside the doru is a black diamond. While investigating Mr. Bellman’s wife ends up dead and now Alex, Cordelia’s almost ex-husband and homicide detective, is on the case. Harley finds Alex to be drool worthy, but tries not to show it in front of Cordelia. Why is a black diamond inside the doru and why was it left at Bellman’s? Was Mrs. Bellman murdered? What is going to happen next? Harley and Cordelia set out to solve the riddle while Harley works hard to keep hidden from Anton (she would like to keep her legs intact).
Murder on the Hill is a cute and humorous cozy mystery. The story is not long and get easily be read in a couple of hours. The mystery is not easily solved and when the book ends you wonder what Harley will get up to next. I give Murder on the Hill 4 out of 5 stars.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As if that weren't enough, the engaging main character isn't who she used to be, well, maybe a little, but she's working on becoming somebody a little better - except for the bit about tea, cake and champagne! The wonderful characters around her have their own mysteriousness, and then there is a little bit of sizzle.... A dominatrix, really?!? Oh, and there is that unresolved bit of Candi's almost ex. And Cole - does he sound delicious? Dangerous? Not all is open and aboveboard there either. Party on friends - there is a second book in this series and I bought it. Yes - actually PAID for the thing. That is how good this book is! Enjoy!
A mystery without cliffhangers. A quick read stand alone book with ongoing characters. Implied only sex. No nudity. The dominatrix scene was played for humor rather than heat and STILL was not what I would call explicit sex. In fact, there was little sexuality involved and it was happening in the background. People need to relax. Occasional cursing. About what you hear if you are out and about in a city. Set in London. Written 2014 (this latter factoid is because I initially thought it might have been written in the 90's, but eventually the technology caught up.) -- Thoroughly enjoyable with likable characters. Not sure on every aspect of the wrap up, but I caught enough to not lose any sleep over it. Some really nice situational humor. The h was believable and not overwritten in a strained effort to make us like her. The characters were pretty much written to be real people. I plan to read the 2nd in the series.
If the author could clean up her English, her stories would be delightful. Unfortunately, for me, they detracted too much to really enjoy the book.
The author has the potential to be good. But was not especially good in this book. The plot was lightweight. The characters were pretty undeveloped. And there far too many errors in grammar and spelling. Not the kind that drive you up the wall by making it difficult to understand what the author is saying, but just too many. The author needs someone to do a final read of the manuscripts before publishing them.
I am a great fan of mysteries and found this book not only entertaining, but also really well done, in the fact that you really don't know who the culprit is until the end !
It has a great pace and I love how Cordelia and Harley are so well described you can really relate to them as well as picture them, of course there is also the mystery around who Cole really is and whats up with Alex the ex.
A thoroughly good read and look forward to reading the next book now
