About the Author

Carlene O’Connor comes from a long line of Irish storytellers. Her great-grandmother emigrated from Ireland filled with tales and the stories have been flowing ever since. Of all the places across the pond she’s wandered, she fell most in love with a walled town in County Limerick and was inspired to create the town of Kilbane, County Cork. Carlene currently divides her time between New York and the Emerald Isle. She is currently at work on the next book in the Irish Village Mystery series.

Too Cute A Novel, Too Predictable A Heroine, BUT I Kept On Reading

This was for me a particularly aggravating crime novel -- the kind that drives you crazy while you're reading it, but that keeps you reading until the bitter end. Why crazy-making? First, I found it hard to follow, what with everyone whirling about at a great rate. Secondly, the self- conscious Irishness of many of the characters seemed overdone. Finally, the heroine is one of those who insists on putting herself in danger -- she won't tell the policeman about the threatening letter, she will drop heavy-handed hints of suspicion around possible murderers, and she will go to the private meeting at the secluded cottage where --- you get the drift. Still and all, I kept reading to the end, because I wanted to find out who had done it, or rather I wanted to find out if my guess as to who had done it was correct. It was. I toyed with reading the next in the series, "Murder at an Irish Wedding", but have not yet succumbed. Shall probably do so, and will probably resent it.

Sorry Irish people but this book made you seem truly unlikeable. The Irish villagers depicted are an insular, backwards, narrow-minded bunch and made me want to stay as far away from Ireland as possible. The heroine proudly asserts that she doesn’t like to eat Chinese food because she is traditional or some such nonsense. Ok we get it- brown bread and Barry’s tea are the best. If I had to read ‘jaysus’ or ‘eedjit’ one more time I was going to tear my hair out. I really enjoy sarcasm and dry wit but when these characters were sarcastic with each other it just came off as nasty. The six brothers and sisters came off as annoying rather than endearing.

On to the mystery- it wasn’t terrible. I did want to know what had happened and although it was not entirely believable it wasn’t completely unsatisfying. It did take forever to get there and the heroine acts in a ridiculous manner throughout. The cop guy also never answered his phone at the most crucial moments. What kind of cop lets his phone go to voicemail so much during a crucial murder investigation?

Will not continue with rest of series.

It has been a long time since I sat up to the wee hours to be so engaged in a book such as Murder in an Irish Village. I even double checked how to pronounce the names of some of the characters to make sure I had them right (although it was mostly the protagonist, Siobhan's. Once that was settled I have enjoyed the plot development throughout, albeit not the deaths of her parents that set things in motion, the protestations of innocence of the condemned , and bodies found lying about. That is the overarching outline..every thing including Siobhan's 5 siblings, her giving up a stint to join her BFF's in Dublin to go to University, proving her brother's innocence while running a successful bistro. And of course the handsome lads that present themselves to her as potential courtiers , all while she searches for the truth and the true villain. Oh my, my, this is a grand tale if I ever read one

Slow Starter, Ends Well.

I read a lot of mysteries and basically enjoyed this one. The description of small village life in Ireland was interesting and one of the reasons I liked the book. She painted a picture with fine detail allowing you to feel that you were actually there. The mystery itself, when finally presented was done well. I have to admit, I did not have any idea of who the killer was until the end of the book. Overall I would recommend this book. However, there were a few things that I didn't like. First, the story took awhile to develop. Much of the first chapters were spent on laying out the background for what eventually was the main reason for the murder. If you like a mystery that slowly develops then this is the book for you. I am not as patient. The second thing that I personally had problem with was the names of the characters. Several were In Gaelic spelling and I had no idea how to pronounce them. This may be a silly thing, but it kept me from really getting close to the characters. Every time I would come across a name, it was just these letters that barred me from getting to identify with them. As I said that was just me. I finally went the internet and got the pronounciation for each name...boy was that an eye opener. And it did make a difference in my enjoyment of the story. So, to sum up, the story is a good one, well written. But because I tend to like my mysteries take off a little sooner and with names I can pronounce(sorry), I do not intend to read the rest of the series..

Unable to Warm Up to this Cozy Mystery

I couldn't finish it. I may try to get back to it at some time because I dislike not finishing a book, but the writing was so poor. I thought that if I heard the narrator say, "he said" or "she said" one more time during the dialogues between the characters, my brain would emplode. I had to stop reading the book. I kept asking myself, "Where is the editor?" If the dialogue ending pattern had been varied just a bit, I might have been able to suspend my internal editor and continue with the story, but I wasn't able to do it. A disappointment.

Siobhán O’Sullivan has had her own 2020: her parents were killed in an accident leaving the young woman to not only keep the family's bistro open and running, but raising her multitude of siblings.

If that wasn't enough, a dead body was found in the cafe. Needing to keep both her family together and the bistro open, Siobhán goes about investigating the murder despite the local police admonishing her.

This was a great read. The author really puts the reader in Ireland where the story takes place, using plenty of Gaelic terms (thankfully, there is a list of common words and phrases to consult as well as pronunciations).

I enjoyed the book so much that when another book popped up at a great price, I didn't hesitate to grab it and will review it probably sometime next year.

The books is a solid <b>4 paws</b> -- especially for those of us who enjoy reading mysteries with settings other than the United States.

I enjoyed this read although it took me a little while to get into it. It’s set in a small town near Kilbane in County Cork and throughout the Irish setting is beautifully evoked. It’s about a young woman’s (Siobhan O’Sullivan’s) struggles to keep the family bistro going with her five siblings. Sadly the family lost their parents recently in an accident so life is tough. Then they awake one morning to find a murdered body sat at one of the bistro’s tables, dressed in a suit with a pair of pink scissors stuck in his chest.

There’s plenty of good craic as this story unfolds. Siobhan joins forces with the local Garda, especially Macdara ( cool name) and there’s also another American man on the scene who has film star good looks. There’s some tension ( no plot spoilers) and danger too as the story unfolds to a good end with some fiendish twists and turns along the way. Recommended ****

The complications of large families

Siobhan’s parents were killed when their car was hit by a young drunken driver leaving six children to operate the bistro in the village. When the driver’s younger brother showed up claiming it was not his brother’s fault Siobahn’s older brother started a fist fight and then passed out in a drunken stupor. When the young brother was murdered and his body found the next morning in the dining room of the bistro Siobahn’s brother was was investigated for the killing and jailed. Siobahn’s became obsessed with finding the truth and the feeling in the small town intensified as she struggled to understand who was responsible both for the death of her parents and the arrest of her brother.
I really enjoyed the story and a glimpse of Irish Village life.

She managed to make Officer Macdara seem like a boob who couldn't figure anything out unless she suggested it. Who he should talk to and about what. Had planned on reading her other books but not now.

The language flowed smoothly after the first few pages and I laughed out loud a few times. I am glad to meet a writer who does not people her books with characters too good, or too bad to be true.
