Sex, Murder, and Killer Cupcakes (Marian Moyer Book 1) is about the murder of Alec, a model for the Food Porn magazine run by Marian, Addison, and Rory. Barry, a friend at the police department lets them know that they are suspects. Marian, who works as a crime scene photographer will not be getting any work until they have been cleared as suspects. So, they must work to solve the murder before the police arrest them for the murder.
This was a fun, fast-paced read. The author gave great descriptions and details of the characters, the reader can connect with the Marian, Addison, and Rory. Their friendship and Rory’s feelings for Addison make this book enjoyable to read.
A couple of funny parts are when Marian visits her parents. She describes her mother as “200 pounds of motherly spitfire” and when her father calls her work porn she gets angry and tells him it is not porn because everything X-rated is cover up. That topic seems to be frequent so tempers flare.
A sweet part was when Rory calls Addison’s boyfriend, Pete after they found the body of Alec. He wanted her to be comforted even if it was by somebody else. Rory is in love with Addison, but she doesn’t see him in that way.
My rating for Sex, Murder, and Killer Cupcakes (Marian Moyer Book 1) is 4 out of 5 stars. There were several errors that caused my rating of four stars rather than of five stars. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy mysteries. There is some violence, so it would not be appropriate for young readers.
Anyway, like I said, it was all right. I think the author should have studied more on the subject of mystery writing and reading a lot more of the genre.
Marian is well developed, and Addison is nearly so. We get a good amount of Marian's history, and some of their joint history. We interact with Marian's parents; we see how the ladies act normally; and how they react while under stress, both with each other, with friends, and with strangers. I hope we see more development of them and of the men in future books.
I learned what a Juicy Lucy is, and that Minneapolis takes credit for it. That's about it for setting. The plot was really quite good. There's a touch of romance.
Do I need to read books before this one: no
Would I read more of the series: yes!
Cliffhanger: not with the crime
Sex: kisses and arousal; sex is mentioned as having happened, but it's in the past or behind closed doors
Language: 0 F words, 13 Lord's name in vain, 2 S words
Violence: poison, explosion, loud argument with parents, stalking, breaking and entering, armed kidnapping, marijuana use referenced
Did the author mistakenly change Richard's name to Mike and then back to Richard? Or did Marian name the mic? Or was a character trying to be oblique?
Marian recovers from her fall in less than 24 hours, with no residual aches, scrapes, etc.
The writing style I did like. Tgere were sone good laugh out loud moments. The story line was sloppy which was a turn off. I get frustrated with dumbing down woman whether it is in their personal life or professional is never appreciated. So many damn tantrums from the 2 female leads. Hysterical tears from a crime scene photographer. It had so much potential. I hope Marion gets to keep both till death do them part.
Top international reviews
Never boring with not too much background.
Why Do I always know the murderer/baddy before they are revealed?
Book one was brilliant. Even though I knew the characters in book two, the story end was a real surprise to me. The storyline kept me interested all the way through.
I want to read more of her work now. Brilliant story, brilliant author.
