Yolanda Renée has woven a tale of sheer suspense, a story that is wound tight and runs like clockwork. The characters are extremely well developed and the details of their lives and their backgrounds seep out throughout the story. By the end of the book, you know those characters as if they were people you met with on a daily basis. The plot is ingenious. I thought I'd guessed who it was but, no, the story went off in a completely different direction. Excellent story, I'm really looking forward to the next one.

Reviewed by Stuart R West: Murder, Madness & Love, is a stupendous whodunnit.  My favorite part of the book is how Ms. Renee kept me guessing as to the innocence or guilt of the (anti?) heroine until the ending. Very Hitchcockian, high praise indeed. At times the romance got to be a bit much for me, but, hey, that's just my personal "guy" tastes. If this is Ms. Renee's first book, I can't wait to read her follow-ups and am thrilled there's another Detective Quaid book following this one. I highly recommend this book, a fantastic mystery.

What an exciting murder mystery. The author weaves a fascinating tale with wonderful characters that you care about almost as soon as you are introduced. The plot twists and turns in so many directions you find it hard to put down in fear you will miss something. I was breathless by the time the story concluded. I want more, more, more! Looking forward to more from this author!

The novel starts with a murder of a beautiful woman in the snowy streets of Anchorage, the same night Steven Quaid and Sarah Palmer first spot each other across the distance. In a rare light moment, in an attempt to "vanquish the blackness of winter to another time", Sarah has rushed into the fresh snow to make snow angels. Despite his initial annoyance at a woman alone on the streets at midnight, Steven henceforth regards Sarah as his "snow angel".

The chase is on to find the murderer of the first victim, Debra, and it continues relentlessly as other women die. Who is committing these murders? Steven knows they are irrevocably linked to the death of Michael Palmer and his 'black' widow, Sarah Palmer. Each of the women's murder scenes is accompanied by a note - From Your Dead Valentine. The detectives know the notes are aimed at Sarah Palmer. Each of the dead women look just like her.

The murderer leads the investigative team on a merry chase, with many red herrings along the way. The murders are occurring on the 14th of each month, so the rush is on to track down the murderer before February 14th, which is calculated as the date Sarah Palmer will die -- her wedding anniversary with Michael Palmer.

Sarah Palmer is in a predicament right from the start. She is being stalked by a murderer with a penchant for knifing victims and scaring her half to death with heavy-breathing phone calls and night visits to her bedroom, yet the press and some of the police hired to protect her believe she is the murderer of Michael Palmer. As Detective Terry O'Conner says: "...while the case has gone cold, secrets never stay secrets forever." "Black widows devour husbands and Terry feared she would strike again.

In the beginning I thought this book was going to be a winner but then suddenly the main characters would have an abrupt change of emotions. This seemed contrived to make the story more suspensful but failed to make the characters/circumstances believable.

This book almost worked. I applaud the author for this first effort.

There were a few good surprises, and the mystery kept me guessing. But my fundamental problem with the story was that the pacing. Characters changed their emotional states much too quickly. One minute a character is weeping and terrified, then she's giggling and being coquettish with a character you know she doesn't like.

Ultimately, I just didn't believe some of the characters would act the way they did.

But this has the mark of good writing. Watch for future books from this author.

I love a great mystery story and this definitely does not disappoint! Sarah Palmer is at the center of a series of murders and it isn't clear whether she is responsible for committing them or the victim in some sick twisted plan since she's referred to as the black widow for her prior husband's suspicious death that happened before this story takes place. Detective Steven Quaid is called in to investigate the case and things get really intense when he develops feelings for Sarah. I love how this book held my interest and kept me wondering how it was all going to play out the entire time. There's a significant amount of suspense throughout this story and several twists and turns thrown in to keep the reader off kilter. I loved reading this and I highly recommend this book to anyone!

When Sarah's husband Michael died, she was accused of murdering him and named the Black Widow. Now back in Alaska, she starts receiving Valentine's on the 14th of each month, the same night a woman looking like her get's murdered. With Sarah being threatened by a stalker and others wanting justice for her murdering her husband, will the truth come out? Did Sarah really kill Michael or was it the person that's now stalking her? I will say this, I had four possible suspects on who I thought it could be, and of my list, I was correct on who it was. Can you figure out the person behind the murders? Is it Sarah or someone else?

If anything might throw a dedicated, talented, homicide detective off balance while on the trail of a dangerous serial killer, I imagine developing feelings for her is at the top of the list. Detective Dennis "Hawk" Quaid, is investigating a series a gruesome murders and much of the evidence points to the story's main character, Sarah Palmer. Her wealthy husband died in an mysterious accident which left only her closest friends believing her innocence and the rest donning Palmer the, "The Black Widow." Now the killer is back and and we are left wondering if the killer is stalking Palmer - will she be the next victim, or is she the killer who got away with murdering her husband? The very police assigned to protect her from the stalker, even believe she is guilty. The author does a fabulous job of keeping the reader guessing throughout the entire book.

I enjoyed this author's writing style. It reminded me of older Hitchcock stories. She has authored a complex mystery, full of suspense with just enough viable suspects to keep you wondering. Just when you think you know the answer, the author cleverly adds a red herring or clue that sends you down another path. She is a remarkable writer and I'm a new fan and can't wait to read more.

Her characters are complex and well written. I like that the protagonist is flawed and true to life. The dialogue is well written and flows well. The plot is tight. There's nothing added that isn't necessary. She does an excellent job of vividly describing the settings without overdoing it. The plot is tight and suspenseful. She has crafted a masterful crime suspense novel wrapped inside a mystery with the perfect amount of romance added to spice it up.
