I'm not much for reviewing but I feel compelled to say how much I enjoyed this book. Safran has a natural writing style that resonated with me personally and kept me turning the pages. I also really liked how the book teased me as a reader, leading me towards one conclusion only to blow it out of the water later on. At the end I still felt as though I was being implored by the writer to come to my own decision and I respect that.

One thing that really stood out to me was the blatant racism still evidenced in the south and how casually it's treated there, a real eye opener. Being from another country this was probably the one thing Safran highlighted really well without being too judgmental himself.

Definitely Different True Crime Story - a fun and fabulous read!

I really, really enjoyed this book. It's both an insightful investigation and a rollicking ride.

On his quest to find out what really happened in the murder of a white supremacist who he'd once interviewed, irreverent Australian "shock-doc(umentary)" -maker John Safran treats each person he meets as if they are one of his closest friends - even if on the inside he is quaking in his boots. This way of interacting with people gains him an intimacy with each source that other more "objective" reporters could never come close to.

Thus the killer familiarly calls him "n---a" and enlists him to act as a go-between in a romance, and the police, detectives and lawyers let John look at - and sometimes even have copies of - evidence that he probably shouldn't be seeing. Other players in this insanely complex, real-life drama confide in him, revealing as they do various traits about both the murderer and the victim which only seem to further complicate what is already far from a clear-cut situation.

Anyone who's familiar with John Safran and has seen him on TV or heard him on the radio won't be able to resist hearing the story told in his voice; this adds to the humour that is spread through the account. If you don't know him, you'll get a sense of who he is from the book too, as John delightfully and humourously includes descriptions of his own life growing up in Melbourne, Australia. Who he is and how he came to do the kind of reporting he does are important since his approach is so personal (much as was John Berendt's in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil). If you want straight, objective crime reporting, look elsewhere, but if you enjoy a fantastical tale that is actually true, read this book!

I was totally surprised by this book. I loved not only the unexpectedly dark and poignant moments as much as the usual John Safran levity. Quite unique in writing style too. Loved it.

I have always loved John for his honesty and dare. Been following him for years to places very few dare venture. He started me on Safran vs God, and me as a lover of all things religious (although a converted atheist from Catholicism), I found his take on religion an expose of human endeavour to control or feel safe so enlightening. His personality cracks me up all the time. (By the way, I am Eurasian in case you're reading this John!! hahaha!) It is no wonder that I could feel his essence in this book which took guts and conviction to produce. I am sure John didn't expect the outcome of his investigation, and I was frightened all the time for his safety. But the written words kept my fear at bay. What an extraordinary revelation of the deep south, up close and personal! Well done John. Keep on keeping on! Yes, I had the opportunity to shake your hand when you came to Perth.

This book describes John Safran's experiences during his time in Mississippi when he met and interviewed Richard Barrett, a white supremacist, who was subsequently murdered a short time after the interview. John Safran then went on to describe his interactions/interviews with Richard Barrett's alleged African American killer, the killer's family, friends and Ku Klux Klansmen. John Safran is a unique personality in Australia, however his writing style in this book was not appealing to me. I read the whole book waiting expectantly for an unexpected revelation or surprise of discovery on the part of John Safran, this did not happen. I gave the book 3 stars only because it held my interest. There were grammatical errors, which is distracting when reading, however this may be poor editing and not the fault of the author. If he publishes further books, they will not be on my must read list.

John Safran spends most of his life operating without a filter and that's exactly how this book reads. John Safran in his own words. It's not exactly John Berendt or Truman Capote or even John Grisham. Its pretty much John Safran writing a book about a story that was not really a story. It was a little bit interesting but his tone and style were both irritating. A bit grating and awkward exactly like John Safran is.

Looking for an alternative to Jon Ronson? John Safran is your man. Self deprecating, honest and wry this is a story that could have been all sorts of pointless but instead it is riveting. Start reading it to find out about the murder and then keep reading and get to know the mix of characters that support the narrative. Like a bumbling amateur sleuth, surrounded by some strange and complex deep Southerners, this makes you laugh and then question yourself and your own prejudices. I can only hope someone out there is committing another crime for John Safran to write about.

A Different World

I have been a fan of John Safran since his days on Race Around the World and was pleased to see he had written a book, in the true crime genre. The victim of the murder in question was a white supremacist who Safran had interviewed, and played a cruel prank on, during the filming of Safran's TV series Race Relations.

Safran travelled to Mississippi and attempted to interview (mostly successfully) all the players involved, from other white supremacists, lawyers, police, campaigners, relatives and even the killer himself.

Highly recommend.
