As a twelve year old, I borrowed a book from the library that I thought was a vampire novel. It turned out to be the true story of British "vampire" serial killer, John Haigh (amazing the things they'll let a 12 year old check out!). Nonetheless, I was fascinated, and even though the librarian wouldn't let me take out any other books on the subject, I became a true crime junkie, burning my way through True Detective magazines by the dozen.

Forty years later, I feel as though I've investigated more cases of murder than most homicide detectives, studied more serial killers than your average profiler, and spent more time than a conference full of psychologists trying to understand what every true crime buff really wants to know; Why do they do it?

My books feature the cases that interest me most. I hope that you will find them equally fascinating.

I’ve read all of the volumes in this series and have found many of the stories to be interesting and frightening. In this book the author has put together harrowing stories that are brutal in the extreme. Especially the very last story of the collection. It is hard to believe the number of sick, sick people walking this earth.

I'm a big fan of the series, and of Robert Keller in general, but there are some truly needless false inclusions. For example, in the Lawson family murders segment, things like "“Pa,” was all she got out before Charlie shot her dead." and "Their screams were drowned out by the boom of the shotgun." are quoted as factually accurate when there's absolutely no way anyone on Earth could ever have known that. There were no witnesses to the crime and the perpetrator ended himself before capture, leaving 2 suicide notes consisting of 2 incomplete sentences, neither of which documented the killings in even the vaguest of terms. There's no need whatsoever to add fake junk into already compelling and well-written histories, and I'm of the opinion that it actually devalues the victims to just make crap up to goose the empathy factor.

Keller's better than this, or at least he should be.

I read Robert Keller's books because they don't give me the background on the murder victim's neighbor's cousin's best friend's mother. They're straightforward with the information and makes them some of the best true crime stories I've read. This book is no different, to the point and readable stories.

I'm so glad that I have more Volumes of Murder Most Vile to read. Mr. Keller never ceases to amaze me with all the unique vignettes he is able to find and present to his audience. The range of types of cases was great. His voice in telling these violent tales of sorrow, pain, deviance, and retribution is as strong as ever. Some cases especially those involving children are so harrowing as well as terribly heartbreaking.

I liked how Robert Keller combines cases from the past with more recent murders. It often proves that the threat of capital punishment and long term imprisonment are no deterrents. These killers are ruled by their out of control emotions ranging from rage to passion. Get this book.

This one contains some real shockers and as usual the author tells the story as if it is being played out in front of you. A fantastic read and eye opener. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoy gruesome true crime.
