About the Author

David Casarett, M.D., is a physician, researcher, and tenured associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He is the author of three acclaimed works of non-fiction. His studies have resulted in more than one hundred articles and book chapters, published in leading medical journals such as JAMA and The New England Journal of Medicine. His many awards include the prestigious U.S. Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. He lives in Philadelphia.

If you enjoy Alexander McCall Smith's No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, you will probably enjoy this book.
This is an entertaining, low-key, somewhat predictable mystery set in Thailand. No sex or violence.
The author does a good job of making you feel as if you are in Asia, imbuing the story with details about Thai everyday life and culture.
The main characters are likable -- the story leaves you looking forward to their next adventure together.
When you start reading this book, be sure to read slowly. The author's style is rather wordy, and you may be tempted to skim some of the text. But every detail is important, and every character re-appears later in the story, so you have to read slowly enough to absorb the details and to remember all the Thai names of the characters.

I love Thailand and have visited Chiang Mai so I looked forward to reading this mystery set there. I rarely stop reading a book once I started, but the writing was so poor and repetitive that I gave up after the first chapter and returned the book. Thoroughly irritating.

Being a physician myself - in my case, a pediatrician - I was fully prepared to find this cozy mystery poorly researched and badly written. I figured the author was just misusing his M.D. to foist one more mediocre book upon the public. Instead, I discovered a carefully researched introduction to Thailand and, in particular, the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai. More importantly, I found a very enjoyable tale complete with sensitive and nuanced digressions on biomedical and other ethical matters. The author is not merely a doctor. He is a writer, and quite a good one. This cozy mystery is highly recommended.

I am occasionally overcome by the temptation to get a kindle book because it is on sale. Why I persist I am not sure, but perhaps it is because once in a while I get one that is just right. I loved this book for a variety of reasons. Dr.Casarett really captures the pattern of speech, the atmosphere, and the culture of northern Thailand. It isn't a complex mystery but it has what mysteries most need - great characters! I want to visit Ladarat (main character) and see how things are going. Also I love books where the people are by and large kind, or honorable. I wasn't stressed reading it.
It is a kind, small mystery, enjoyable, clever, and I can't wait for the next one.

The premise of book was good but the development of the plot and characters was badly written.
I love mysteries that take place in foreign countries, but this did not equate to No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, or the more serious Martin Beck series.
When the characters wouldn't talk to each other, or found it difficult to ask questions or impart information due to self deprecation or a false sense of humility, rather than feeling empathy, I wanted to to smack them on the top their heads and scream, "Spit it out already!"
The only great thing about the book is it introduced me to blue butterfly pea tea, and for that I am grateful and added a star to my rating.

Any fan of Alexander McCall Smith will greatly enjoy this book as here are many similarities. There are also enough differences to make it stand on it's own. . The characters are well developed and the author clearly has a feel for the Thai culture and food. I am forward to reading the second book when it is released.

Many books are advertised as comparable to Alexander McCall Smith's Precious Ramotswe stories, but this is the first time I find a book that actually lives up to such advertising (I've read all of the #1 Ladies Detective Agency books). I loved this mystery by David Casarett and didn't want to put it down. It held my attention throughout the book with good surprises at the end. I learned much about the Thai culture as well. I recommend this book and am looking forward to the next one.

The storyline was pleasant. References to food made me hungry to try some. Resolution was sound, and I will want to read the next book. Guess I got interested enough in the characters!

I know Thailand, I love Chiang Mai, and I was delighted to hear of a series of detective novels set in that city. But I was left feeling let down.
The author seemed to be channelling Alexander McCall Smith, the book read and felt like a Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency novel transferred from Botswana to Thailand. This might have worked if the book actually evoked any real feeling of being in Thailand but despite the frequent (sometimes rather forced) injections of Thai phrases and food references the setting just didn't come alive. I wanted to be taken back to Chiang Mai, but felt I could be anywhere. All very disappointing.
