"This is the second book in the High Desert Cozy Mystery series by Dianne Harman. It can definitely be read as a stand alone, as can all her books, but I would suggest reading them in order--there is a continuity of characters. And besides they are all so good you really are going to want to read them all! (Yes, I have read them all and am always eagerly awaiting the next.) The foods that the resident chef makes in this book sound so good and of course the recipes are included at the end.

I loved Marty Morgan's Black Lab who was smart enough to know that he would not walk in the desert off the compound without his booties--of course the guys in this book were slightly embarrassed to be seen walking him (you have to read to find out why).

There were lots of suspects in this one and they all had good reason to murder the old desert rat Randy--but which one did it-quite a few twists and turns and my favorite Lab becomes a hero!"

This series has good description of the Palm Springs desert area, historical info (just enough to make a history buff happy, but not too much to bore the non-history buffs), a Labrador retriever, mild psychic action, a touch of romance (it’s a cozy, so no graphic sex scenes), a mystery, and no cliffhanger endings….what more could you ask? The only criticism I have is that Marty becomes too involved in detecting (to the point of danger) and the police don’t seem to do enough….but, a good book nevertheless. Highly recommend it. Each one can be read as a “stand alone”, but reading them in order is better because backstory is helpful.

Indian artifacts lead to murder

Marty Morgan gets involved in investigating a murder of the man who wanted to hire her to appraise his collection of Indian artifacts. She finds his body, and her curiosity won't be satisfied until she unearths the truth about his death. The suspects are revealed ahead of the main story in short vignettes that describe motives and potential means of committing the crime by each suspect. I became familiar with this aspect of writing while reading other books in the series. At first I found it disconcerting, but knowing the information doesn't interfere with the plot as it evolves. I enjoy reading about the main characters as their personal stories develop in the series.

I personally love a cozy mystery and this series allows me a comfortable read. I also enjoy learning facts about the type of antique appraisals Marty does in each book. In this episode the black market in Indian artifacts makes the story more interesting. A bonus offered by the author are tempting recipes at the end of the book, but I wish I could print them from my Kindle.

Appraies it so he can set a price. When Liz left she decided he couldn't help him when she knew how many of the objects were stolen from the tribes but when she got be e found him dead with tomahawk in hishead. Following the clues with Liz until the conclusion is an entertaining adventure. All of Dianne's series are great reading.Alice

Dianne Harman is one of my favorite authors and I highly recommend this book series plus any others she has written.

I was drawn to this book due to two motivators; one being it deals with Native American artifacts and two, it is set in the high desert.
I lived in the southwest most of my life and had a deep passion for anything Native American. Here Marty an antiques dealer, her sister and dog get caught up in a murder mystery. Some shades of the famous ‘Murder She Wrote’ series. Seems Randy Jones; some old desert rat has a secret stash of Native American artifacts worth millions. He’s not even willing to share it with his son. Lots of suspects here and you keep on guessing just who it is. This author surely did her research on antiques. Adventure and Mystery abound in this Cozy Desert Mystery. A bonus was some delicious recipes at the back of the book. I recommend this book with a solid 5 stars.
