Readers of the "Murder, She Wrote" series know that Cabot Cove, the picturesque town in Maine, home to mystery writer and amateur sleuth Jessica Fletcher has had its share of murders and disreputable visitors over the years. But in "Domestic Malice" author Donald Bain seems determined to peel back the town's innocence and bring it into the 21st century. This portrait of small town life runs the gamut from volatile town council meetings to a colorful blueberry festival, with petty crimes, brash politics and unethical legal practices in between. At the heart of the novel is a disturbing incident of domestic abuse, which has tragic
consequences for a Cabot Cove family. Unlike previous "Murder, She Wrote" entries, "Domestic Malice" does not end on a light note or with a smile on Jessica's face. Instead, at book's end, the reader is reminded that no one, not even Jessica Fletcher, is perfect, and that good can come from evil. Although a bit draggy in its narrative, "Domestic Malice" breaks the mold set by previous "Murder" books with Bain's fresh, bold look at a modern-day small town. It's that very freshness that makes "Domestic Malice" one of the best in the "Murder, She Wrote" series.

While most Murder She Wrote mysteries are somewhat whimsical, this one takes a dark turn and explores domestic abuse. Josh Wolcott is a financial planner who has been abusing his wife Myriam. Josh, of course, turns up dead, shot in the chest in his own driveway. Myriam is the prime suspect. Jessica, who has been volunteering at the domestic abuse shelter is caught in the middle of trying to solve this murder while being especially compassionate towards Myriam. There are several "shady" characters, including Myriam's lawyer, her abusive mother and others who were cheated by Josh. There are twists and turns to this story; Harry McGraw makes an unexpected appearance and he provides a good foil for Jessica. This book is unusual in that it runs through the trial of Myriam. The revelation of Josh's killer comes during the trial, and is a real shocker. This is one book I highly recommend to anyone interested in domestic violence and it's tragic consequences.

I have read all of the Murder She Wrote books and have enjoyed all of them. (Most I have read at least twice, some 3 times.) This is one of the newer ones. I can't quite put my finger on it but for some reason I didn't enjoy this one quite as well as all the others. It was (still) well written and an easy read. I enjoy the series as it is like watching the show. For me, personally, I just didn't enjoy this one as well. This is the first book in the series that I didn't love. Harry, the PI from Boston, is in this book so that was fun. I look forward to the next book(s) in the series.

A Different Story from the Usual

I have read all of these Murder She Wrote novels except one (the one set in New Orleans). This one was a fast read and a bit different. It takes up the issue of domestic violence and how to affects everyone in the family from the adults to the children.
Of course there is a murder, that being the husband of an abused woman. The story is basically about how Jessica goes about finding out who actually pulled the trigger and killed this abusing husband. There is also a side story about an influential man in town who wants to shut down the woman's shelter. The problem for me was that I never really figured out why this was part of the story. I made some attempts to link some of the characters and the issues surrounding this man, his business, and the town shelter but I never really made a good connection. I do think this was one of the less interesting and weaker story lines in this series of books. Although I always enjoy these novels, this was not one of my favorites. I also figured out who pulled the trigger fairly early on and so this always makes for a weaker murder mystery for me.
If you like this series, this will be a good but not great read even though I think the topic is very timely.

I commend the writers of this book for addressing an issue that does not get near as much attention as it deserves. I did find some of the main characters to be a bit disturbing, one of three being the mother, but the plain truth of the matter is that characters such as hers do play such a big factor in women not seeking help. This particular book in the series was darker than usual and not easy to read, but it was a great “reaching out” to address an issue that has been swept under the rug and not taken seriously enough for a long time.

I was at first reticent to buy this, even though I have read and own all the previous books in the series. I read many reviews saying that the issue of domestic violence was dominating the story. I have just finished the book and I can say that personally I think this is one of the best mystery in the series! The characters, story, plot, narrative, etc were all very well executed. I did not feel lectured on the issue of domestic violence at all and did not find it overbearing.

If you liked the previous books in the series, you will certainly like this one! Do not miss out.

I read some of the other reviews, and don't understand the people who didn't enjoy it. Of course it has a "dark theme" because it's about domestic violence... and it's a serious topic that was refreshing in a mystery because it's a serious problem that people constantly hide from. Although I've never experienced it, I know enough about it to understand the story perfectly. The characters were very clear as always. As I read it, I learned to despise the abused victim's mother. The family dynamics and characters made for an interesting story. This is another great read.
