Nikki is involved in the British Secret Service during the cold war years, (1978), before the fall of the Berlin Wall and a member of the world's capital of state surveillance, London's M15 Spy Intelligence Service. The greater part of the story shows how she struggles to achieve her goal, her emotional crisis as a lesbian in the cruel world of espionage when three attempts are made on her life.
The shifts and turns are thought-provoking, keeping suspense and surprises at high level.
As readers we become an addicted page - turner who wishes to know if she survives the onslaughts. She has killed a woman in Cairo and the reader's interest is gripped. Why did it happen? Fear, betrayal, guilt and desperation become part of her life. She says : "human beings cannot exist without water yet I made my own desert".
The story has a high risk, action-packed drive to keep the reader interested with credible facts, suspense and mystery. Are the consequences triumphant at a high cost?
In a spy novel, the reader is not interested in the beauty of the language for its own sake, and thus straight forward language works, like in this novel. Spy thriller readers want the excitement of the protagonist's struggle, navigating the struggle when all seems lost.
Assaults - Nikki lying unconscious in the mud,
Missions- Mission Top Secret tasked by the UK Minister of Defence,
Distrust, leaks, blackmail, disguise, life becoming a lie undercover,
Moles, defectors, allies, enemies, KGB spies,
Security flaws, masking, defensive surveillance,
East Block chemical warfare and British secret toxin formula at risk to fall in hands of Moscow,
The human element in espionage: losing compassion, tenderness, morality,
Becoming self - loathing, seeing death and darkness. Losing companionship
and courage to face the future,
Blackmailing, traitors in service, stealing secrets for ideology or money,
First loyalties to Britain, Moscow, Israel is in the mix,
Losing the absolute truth, entrapment and submission to bed an enemy.
What happens to absolute intense emotional and physical connection when you have to be a tough intelligence agent?
Where does the name the novel come from dear reader? Read how it is suspected that the toxin is embedded at the tip of an umbrella to murder. A fascinating book recommended for the spy thriller lover.

It was interesting to see the whole lady-killer spy, love ‘em and leave ‘em storyline turned around for a female character. Initially that made Nikki seem shallow and cold-hearted, but as the story develops the reader finds she’s more complex. She’s also more impacted by her previous missions than she is willing to admit, which leaves her open and vulnerable at the worst possible time.
This more rounded, emotional character combined with the action and danger of the storyline to create a complex read. The story line contains some interesting secondary characters and a surprise villain.
The story, which is set in 1978, takes place in a town where nothing is as it seems and all the residents are scientists working on biological weapons. Murders, double agents, blackmail, deception and forbidden lesbian love are all components that combine to make an interesting read.
There were a few rough places writing-wise, but the overall story was riveting and a real page-turner. I look forward to the next book in this series.
