Cambridge-educated, British-born L.B. Hathaway writes historical fiction and contributes to a number of popular history magazines and websites. She worked as a lawyer at Lincoln’s Inn in London for almost a decade before becoming a full-time writer.

She brings her love of detective novels set in the Golden Age of Crime and an obsession with English history to her own writing.

The Posie Parker series of cosy crime novels span the 1920s. They each combine a core central mystery, an exploration of the reckless glamour of the age and a feisty protagonist who you would love to have as your best friend.

Her other interests, in no particular order, are: very fast downhill skiing, theatre-going, drinking strong tea, Tudor history, exploring castles and generally trying to cram as much into life as possible.

You are carried along on a journey into the final solution...but is that the end of it? Not so fast! Is there more?
If you remember Max from two other novels, you will be intrigued about him all through the novel.

The Posie Parker series books are always intriguing. I never know the answers the way Pose does but the clues are there. I like her struggles with her life - she's not perfect. I sympathize with her sweet tooth and the way pounds creep up; she doesn't obsess about it but it makes her human. And I love the historical detail the author includes after each story. I find myself looking up many of the references to see pictures and find out more. Definitely adds to the richness of the story.

This mystery did not disappoint; it thrilled.
This is the eighth book in the series, and I eagerly awaited its arrival.
I had thought that “ The Saltwater Murders” was excellent, with its intricate plot, and harrowing twists, and turns, but this book segues very nicely, continuing, in Hitchcockian fashion, the cloak and dagger mishaps, and adventures of its super smart sleuth, Posie Parker.
I was a devotee of Nancy Drew mysteries, as a youngster, and then an ardent Agatha Christie fan, later on, and I conclude that the Posie Parker series is their natural successor.
The story engaged, and captivated me, and indicated that the author had researched, in depth, the time in England, after the Great War.
She has a respect for the era, and her character and plot development manifest a love of the classic English mystery genre.
I cannot wait to read “ Marriage is Murder?”, next in the series.
Appreciation of the author’s writing style, with all the devices to “ hook” me in, and a passion for reading historical mysteries, have made me a loyal reader of these novels.
This book, was a page- turner, the resolution of the murders, and crimes, unraveled in typical, buy entertaining “ Nick Charles” fashion.
I have enjoyed all the books in the series, and hope that LB Hathaway continues to write cases for her spunky, independent- thinker, super- smart, and helplessly romantic heroine.

Pushing the boundaries

With each successive book in the series, author LB Hathaway pushes the boundaries of identity. In Murder of a Movie Star, almost everyone is playing a role. In Murder in Venice, there’s a lot of mask wearing. In The Saltwater Murder we meet some characters who aren’t who they say they are, and in Murder on the White Cliffs, identities are blurred completely. The plots are getting molre complicated, too. I’m liking this series more and more.

This series is one of my all time favorites and I read every one when it comes out. Posie is funny, smart, and wonderfully relatable. I typically read Victorian historical novels but started to get burned out and that’s when I came across this series set in the 20s. At first I expected just nothing but vapid Pretty Young Things but this series is fabulous, rich and Posie’s personal journey through it all is 100% unpredictable. The mysteries are so well thought out, so detailed and so intriguing. It’s a perfect combination Love, love, love.

Don't Bother With This Book!

I just cannot read any more of these books. It's such a shame as they have good storylines, but are badly let down by dreadful editing. To cap it all, this time, Ms Hathaway has included a Scottish character, apparently from Glasgow. The appalling sterotypical attempts to encapsulate his 'Scottish' accent were just beyond the pale and in most cases, the language was used incorrectly. Absolutely laughable!
Thankfully as Posie has now become engaged to Lovelace, she has ceased to call him 'sir' and I have no idea why she was doing that in past books. Now, however, she has started to call Sergeant Rainbird by his last name, a thing a woman of the time and of Posie's class would never have done. She would just have called him Sergeant. I find the lack of good editing and therefore frequent instances of bad grammar and odd use of English, irritating and this detracts so much from the story, that I have decided not to read any more of the series. Also, I think if I hear "sure as bread is bread" once more, I will scream!

Good bit of escapist reading during lockdown and the writing style is reminiscent of Mary Stewart, with a nice build of cliffhanging writing at the end of each chapter. I've read each one of the series, but sort of wish I'd saved my money till these are reduced. Bit harsh, I know, but each book has the same sort of chaotic set up. Over-complicated (not complex) plots; too many characters all jostling for red herring or prime suspect status; a running (tangled) thread of various love stories; constant reference to 1920s fashions, hairstyles, politics; excruciating attempt at various regional accents and of course, hefty chunks of our heroine's bravery, derring do and intelligence. So, although these are undoubtedly cosy mysteries, with no great thought process involved, it's clear the author has chosen the historical genre to avoid the otherwise obvious necessity for technology in all its dubious glory. Unfortunately, that also, inevitably, means the author has missed the memo that shows history did not take kindly to rich women bossing Scotland Yard (and MI5) around, garnering fawning praise and admiration for her glossy beauty and wit. These are glaring, clunky anachronisms and although I enjoyed the read, there was always, at the back of my mind, that disbelief as Posie blithely commanded proceedings. A mental rolling of eyes if you like, knowing full well that if any of this had been real, the delightful Miss Parker would have been firmly relegated to taking notes and making the tea, and patronisingly told to back off and let the men talk. But hey, that would spoil a good story. Oh wait - it did spoil it. For me anyway. Three stars, fun but just trying to hard to convince me get me to suspend my credibility.

After all 7 previous PP books I must confess I find this latest a struggle. The plot is labyrinthine and, for me, a bit hard to follow (or swallow). Posie behaves very strangely - she bosses senior police officials, calls her friendly sergeant from previous novels by his surname, and is somehow not so likeable (a personal opinion of course.) I was also troubled by the author's constant attempts (not for the first time) to write literally the accents of the American and the Glaswegian, making them seem ridiculous. Then not even Agatha Christie stretches her denouments as much as the one here. So complicated I wanted to skip. I didn't but even then the ending was, for me, less than satisfactory. The GOOD points, and there are some. Having grumbled about the plot I must admit it kept me turning the pages, and as outrageous as the denoument was It kept me guessing. Posie no longer calls her fiance "Sir" which I and many others found intensly annoying and puzzling. Not a complete disaster - for that see "MARRIAGE IS MURDER" - but nonetheless the weakest so far in my opinion.

When writing a cozy genre book the point is to not have countless references at the end to cover the points where fact and fiction diverge.. it's unnecessary to state that you made up most of the book anyway when writing fiction.. the only things that should be covered are where you deliberately discard historical facts.. such as dates of real events, inventions, etc, and radically alter their placement or use. Otherwise it goes without saying that it's fiction and therefore imaginary. I don't think the intention was to write cozy anything.. it would be prudent to remove the word from the genre.. as you have researched many aspects of the time and place.. unfortunately I am still finding it difficult to stomach the over the top investigation methods, Posie's ability to boss Scotland Yard around, fiancé notwithstanding. It's not on a par with Christie.. the choice to dumb down the era frequently "for ease of reading" assumes that your readers are unable to use either imagination or their own understanding to cope with the differences between era's.. it's a little insulting.

What Posie doesn't know is that this case is far bigger and more complicated than she could ever have imagined.
I so enjoyed this latest book in the Posie Parker series. Set once more in St Margaret's Bay a place I know well having lived in St Margaret's at Cliffe for 15 years, the story is fast paced and full of twists, turns and red herrings.
Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.
