Based on all of the negative reviews, it seems that Jim Murray has succeeded in creating an uproar among the self-professed whisky cognoscente. No one knows his motivations for naming Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye his 2016 Whisky of the Year except him, but I can't believe that he was paid to do so. To dismiss the entire book because you disagree with the Whisky of the Year is trite. Whether you agree with his scores, they seem to reflect that he judges a whisky on its own merits, regardless of price, distillery, age, or country of origin.

I find it extraordinarily amusing to read all the reviews that slag Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible 2016 based on the choice of Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye as his 2016 Whisky of the Year.

First off, as with all reviews it his opinion. Second off, you have a right to disagree - but please disagree only if you have actually tried the Northern Harvest Rye. Like most, I was quite surprised that Murray chose his whiskey. However, after trying it I found it to be very nice and quite drinkable. (This coming from a guy that normally detests Rye.)

Now I am obviously not nearly as educated as most of the people who offered their expert opinion. But I dare say that I have found more use of the previous versions of Jim Murray's guides then those experts. His reviews have helped me learn what to look for in a whiskey, how to interpret the tastes of different varieties and assisted me in making educated purchasing choices with my limited disposable income. If this is what you need then this guide is clearly worthy of a 5 star rating.

After a thorough (and enjoyable) reading of this book, it seems to me that Murray tends to rate almost everything on a higher scale than most reviewers do. So, what many reviewers might give an 89, he'd give a 93. With that "skewed" rating system in mind, I was able to fairly enjoy his ratings and reviews. However, for those older folks whose eyesight may not be as great as it once was - be warned...the text in this book is VERY VERY SMALL! After about 15 minutes of reading, I had to put the book down and rest my eyes for a while.

His pick of Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye as the "World Whiskey of the Year, 2016" inspired me to seek out that whiskey and try it. Being that I have never tried a Canadian whiskey, and that I do not care for rye, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the Crown Royal pick. So much so that I have gone back and purchased a few extra bottles. I completely agree with his tasting notes on this one.

I guess the real question is, "Would I but this again next year when the 2017 edition comes out"? The answer is "no". Just way too much info on whiskeys I have no interest in. Since I drink American (USA) Bourbons and Whiskeys almost exclusively, I will stick with books that address those, and those only.

If you're just interested in American (USA) whiskeys, you would do much better to purchase Clay Risen's "American Whiskey, Bourbon & Rye: A Guide to the Nation's Favorite Spirit, 2015 Edition" as American whiskeys are only a very small part of Murray's book.

If his 2016 Whiskey of the Year was $300 a bottle all the negative criticisms would be magically transformed into 5 star ratings. Unlike, I dare say, any of the 1 star reviewers, I have actually drank the Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye. It is a thoroughly outstanding whiskey. I also endorse, as ever, the book that brought it to my attention. Thank you Mr Murray.

Interesting how so many people are not interested with this book because of a very controversial choice.
I admire Jim Murray tremendously for making a good quality whisky at an affordable price his top choice.
That takes some doing and it is great that an influential author is finally bringing a well needed balance to the industry.
There are soo many varieties of whisky out there it is a mine feild of choice.

Some will charge you an absolute fortune for quality that can be had for much less. But heres the problem.
Theres sooo much variety Whisky is now becoming very very difficult to categorise and define.
Its a wonderful problem to look into but... it has lead me to belive only that one can't ever really provide a whisky of the year.
I've never understood how someone can say an amazing Rye whisky is better than an amazing bourbon or an amazing single malt speyside is better than an amazing single malt from Islay based on points.

The results are different they are different categories and have their own unique flavour and profile.
Its one of the reasons I give a low score to his work and will continue to do so.
I just don't see how you can lump in one place soo many different styles of whisky and compaire them.

I also don't understand how it helps the reader giving whisky A 90 points whilst whisky B 95 if again the categories are soo different.
Both are obviously good you would be better buying both or chosing out of your preferencial style of whisky.
Indeed if you have type of whisky preference you will subjectively decide which you prefer.

When different styles of whiskys are rated above each other like this the point system is pointless.
