Editorial Reviews

Review

“Carbonell's  anthology is now a distinguished standard, useful as a sourcebook for ideas, teaching, even research. Like the museums she addresses, the collection is marked by its capaciousness of thought and attitude.”
- Bruce Robertson, University of California, Santa Barbara

“Addressing topics as diverse as indigenous curation and technological and cultural interactivity, this anthology challenges museum studies tradition, arguing for the relevance of museums while celebrating the challenges of museum work.”
- Steven Lubar, Brown University

“If the first edition of this acclaimed anthology was a landmark, this revised and enlarged edition is even better - with an impressive transnational coverage of topics, issues, and trends in historical and contemporary museum practice that will be essential reading for scholars, students and professionals.”
- Conal McCarthy, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand

“This new edition offers an innovative and timely perspective on locating the emerging themes and debates in museum studies today. An essential reader for both the scholar and student that combines in a single volume both classic essays and more esoteric, hard-to-find sources.”
- Christopher B. Steiner, Connecticut College

From the Back Cover

Retaining the multidisciplinary focus of the critically acclaimed first edition, the new edition of Museum Studies: An Anthology of Contexts presents a comprehensive collection of approaches to museums and their relation to history, culture, and philosophy. Striking a careful balance between contemporary analysis and historical documentation, the new edition features primary and secondary texts spanning the course of some two hundred years of museum history that reveal a wealth of insights into culture and society.

Among the developments in twenty-first-century museum scholarship featured in this new edition are issues of inclusion and exclusion, repatriation, indigenous models of collection and display, museums in an age of globalization, visitor studies, and interactive technologies. A new section on relationships, interactions, and responsibilities focuses on the intersection of memory, history, ethics, and affect within the museum and beyond its walls. With its expansive nature and multidisciplinary approach, Museum Studies solidifies its reputation as the primary resource for this important academic discipline.

Most of the essays is this collection are poorly written. The arguments are not clear. In addition, the sections are not well organized and lack a clear theme that defines them. Some essays would fit better under different sections. Lastly, the inclusion of poetry was just odd.
