The stuff is awesome, however I have two caveats:
1) Use a latex or nitrile rubber glove when applying it. ... Unless of course you intend to wax your paws as well. :-) This also lets you use it sparingly while still working it thoroughly into the paw pad and inter-pad fur.
2) If you are putting this stuff on a mixed-location dog (indoors + walks or indoors + outdoors), put it on at the front door on your way out, otherwise the non-absorbed fraction leaves warm waxy paw-prints all over indoor surfaces.
I tried everything. Pam cooking spray, yeah that lasted about 50 feet. Vasoline kinda works but what a mess it makes of the truck and house, and it doesn't last long. First time I tried this we did a 4 mile snowshoe and not a lump of ice in sight. I use it all the time now and have not had one problem with ice build up between their toes and pads since. The only complaint I got was from the groomer that said the dogs feet were filthy. It does collect a lot of dirt when walking them around town. And! The dogs love getting it rubbed into their feet almost as much as I love rubbing it into their feet. (Does that sound weird?) Never mind.
I will always use this product in the winter, no doubt about it.
I've tried dog boots, homemade boot concoctions and even had winter boots made for my dogs, all to no avail. They either slipped off as soon as I put them on or didn't do any good and my dogs feet STILL hurt them.
Musher's Secret, though, has been a blessing. I apply it daily to my two older dogs and to my poodle and it's made SUCH a difference. We still can't leave them out too long in the winter weather, but I don't worry about their feet or their pads hurting, splitting, getting (pet safe) ice melter/salt in their pads or between their toes.
I recommend Musher's Secret to EVERY dog owner and I'm looking forward to using it this summer when we take our dogs on walks on the city sidewalks--it's great for hot or cold weather, and we LOVE it.
Um, okay, not to sound sarcastic but this IS a paw salve, not a magic bubble that is going to totally insulate your dog's paws from all of the elements. This is coming from someone who has a dog who ABSOLUTELY freaks out when you put anything boot or shoe-related on her feet and lives in Chicago where we have horrible cold winters with a lot of snow, ice, salt, etc.
That said, it does definitely seem to help with a lot of the discomfort she feels when we're walking outside in the cold. It doesn't seem to leave any film behind even right after I put it on, and I usually only have to put it on about once a week - and that's after washing her paws after we return from our walks to get rid of any salt that may be stuck between her toes. That was also a HUGE help in alleviating some of her discomfort, and something I recommend for those living in areas where salt is used a lot.
(It's also helpful in the spring and summertime when I know people use pesticides and chemicals on their lawns that she inevitably walks over. Dogs paws are magnets for all kinds of nasty things and I'd much rather clean them off for her than have her sit there and ingest unknown toxins into her body)
Unfortunately, until I can get her nails trimmed short enough to try the disposable booties there is just some weather that is too cold for her to walk in. I live in apartment and own a pretty big active dog so our walks are SUPER important for both of our sakes, but when it's really cold and/or inclement weather she just starts to limp once we've been out there a few minutes.Read more ›
