TMI alert: I also use this on myself to prevent nipple chafing. I run a lot, and my shirts rub me raw. This works better than Vaseline but doesn't ruin my shirts. Also, fair warning, don't ever do a Google search for chafed nipples.
The stuff is awesome, however I have two caveats:
1) Use a latex or nitrile rubber glove when applying it. ... Unless of course you intend to wax your paws as well. :-) This also lets you use it sparingly while still working it thoroughly into the paw pad and inter-pad fur.
2) If you are putting this stuff on a mixed-location dog (indoors + walks or indoors + outdoors), put it on at the front door on your way out, otherwise the non-absorbed fraction leaves warm waxy paw-prints all over indoor surfaces.
I bought this large 1 pound jar and put some in a small jar (any used eye cream or face cream bottle would do), and then carry it with me to hike or anywhere with dog.
The large jar can lasts a long time, and my dog doesn't seemed to be bother by it.
However, I find that the product works well for me, too- not just my dog. For years I have had problems with dry skin on my elbows, but when I wiped some excess onto my elbows on a whim after putting it on my dog's feet there was a marked change by the next day. After three applications the roughness and dryness has almost completely healed.
I also have strong allergic reactions to my cats when they rub on me. When I noticed this product helped my dry skin, I decided to try and put it on the side of an allergic reaction. It seems to have helped the swelling and also lessened the itchiness of the area.
It seems Musher's Secret is good for people, too!
For just a couple of examples:
1: My schnauzer lost a front leg to cancer, and due to the changes in the way he lays down he developed a cracked and crusty bothersome callus on the opposite elbow. I started massaging the Secret into the elbow. It immediately soothed the callus, and over time it changed the consistency to something much softer that doesn't appear to bother him at all. I think it will eventually go away.
2: A family member has a dry hand condition that requires prescription creams. The fingertips are especially troublesome. Just on a hunch, I had her start putting some on her fingertips and it is protecting the skin as well as taking down the dryness.
It's good stuff. Keep an eye out for other uses for it. You'll be surprised!
