TMI alert: I also use this on myself to prevent nipple chafing. I run a lot, and my shirts rub me raw. This works better than Vaseline but doesn't ruin my shirts. Also, fair warning, don't ever do a Google search for chafed nipples.
The stuff is awesome, however I have two caveats:
1) Use a latex or nitrile rubber glove when applying it. ... Unless of course you intend to wax your paws as well. :-) This also lets you use it sparingly while still working it thoroughly into the paw pad and inter-pad fur.
2) If you are putting this stuff on a mixed-location dog (indoors + walks or indoors + outdoors), put it on at the front door on your way out, otherwise the non-absorbed fraction leaves warm waxy paw-prints all over indoor surfaces.
I also applied to their nose since its been dry as well. And so far its been good too. Very wet as it should be.
As this is a wax cream I recommend applying this just when you are about to head outdoors, preferably in your mud room area/non-carpeted areas. It is quite slippery when applying it as my dogs are often sliding a little when walking in the kitchen as I don't have a designated mud room in my home. Be aware that when applying this with bare hands you will have to use a soap suitable to remove was based products, I use a dishwashing soap.
My dogs will not tolerate booties of any kind, I recently purchased the Paws Water-proof Dog boot which look like little colored balloons that you put on your dogs paws. They stay pretty securely but my dogs would not walk with these on their paws. So ultimately I am forced to just look into emollient creams for paw protection.
Overall this Musher's cream is very good at protecting my dogs paws from the hot pavement and icy/salty sidewalks. In heavy snow accumulation they do have problems as this cream doesn't prevent snow accumulation between their paw pads but I wouldn't think a cream could do so. I haven't found any better alternative and as that's the case I would highly recommend this if your dog walks on city sidewalks daily. Their paws definitely take a toll and I am thankful this product helps protect their paws.
I have used this product on the last three dogs I’ve had. Living in the Northeast, I deal with snow, salt, ice, and blistering pavement in the summers, and this product is an absolute miracle. I purchased three more containers today for my dog to give out as Christmas presents to her friends. It is that good.
In the winter, I put it on her paws 2 to 3 times a week and she can withstand the bitter cold and salty walks. In the summer when the temperature is 80 and above, I put it on her paws and she can walk on asphalt without issue.
FYI - If your dog is slipping around inside, you have put too much on! You need to work this into the pad, between the toes, and wipe off any excess with a paper towel. I have dark hardwood floors and I have never seen paw prints.
Don’t hesitate to purchase this – – if you love your dog, you simply must use musher’s secret to protect their paws!
