A Must Have for John Williams Fans but "Different"

This is a 3 disc set. The third disc is the usual Star Wars type stuff that is found on many John Williams' sets. The first disc, however, is excellent light classical and some fun pieces - still easy but "semi-serious" stuff. The 2nd disc, especially the cello piece and about half the disc is ultra modern classical, almost depressing stuff and hard to listen to - not in keeping at all with Williams' usual style. Best piece on the 2nd disc is the Olympic piece, last piece on the disc - it makes the whole 2nd disc worthwhile and is truly inspirational.

I am a HUGE Williams fan, and as soon as this was released I had it. The best thing about this collection is that they are actually conducted by the man himself and performed by the great orchestras of the world, instead of those other so called "Fly by night" collections that have less than adequate orchestras playing horrible renditions of his works. Also another great thing is that this set has some of the best and rarely heard concert works, such as "American Journey and Five Sacred Trees Bassoon Concerto" also the amazing recording the The great Chicago Symphony and Yo-Yo Ma playing the suite from "Memoirs Of A Geisha" Those works alone are worth the price of this album, not to mention the amazing movie scores included. I believe this set really sums up this great mans career quite nicely, and if your a big fan of John Williams than I whole Wholeheartedly recommend this CD collection!

I really like this collection a lot. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is purely subjective--there are certain instruments that just don't "do it" for me as solo instruments, and the bassoon is one of them. (Nothing personal to any bassoonists out there-I'm a former trombone player, and I don't care for the trombone as a solo instrument either.) That one piece aside, I do love this collection, and the performances and recording quality are magnificent.

Anyone who enjoys Williams' film music will find the concert music a revelation. The occasional pieces have tremendous and lasting impact, but the subtler stuff, like "Five Sacred Trees" will grow and grow on you with repeated listenings. Performances and recordings are brilliant.

The disk of film music is more familiar, some unnecessary (do we need another recording of "Star Wars?"), but if you do not know his music for "Born on the Fourth of July" you will be very, very glad that it's here.
