I initially bought this book as I happen to know the Author (back in the early music days), although we haven't spoken in some time. I saw this book and decided to give it a go and see what Jay has been up to.
My initial impression is that I like the book and I think it is a straight to the point book on forming new, and hopefully better, habits and thus replacing bad habits. The emphasis in on music production, however, it is basically a self-help book that applies its knowledge to music production, but you can read it purely as a self-help book if you aren't into music production. The ideas presented in the book will apply across any discipline or area of life.
As I mentioned before, I know the Author, or at least I did back in the day. I think he has done a service here for people who quickly want to figure out some self-help without wading through a massive text and he has kept the wording in plain layman's English making for a book that is an easy read.
I have read about 65% of the book thus far and I will read the rest soon. But so far, I am happy to have read the book and I will try to incorporate some of the suggestions and ideas Jason presents in his book into my life and schedule.
There is some good info in the book. I especially appreciate the section on keeping honest friends around you that will tell you the truth; in this case about your music. But I think that principle applies to everything.
Anyway, I'm not here to hand out spoilers or do an exhaustive book report, except to say I think it is certainly worth a read, it is written in such a way as to be easy to read and I really like to the 'get to the point right away' presentation.
Thanks Jay, much appreciated.

Music Production can be an elusive art form for many, and the challenges that face someone who is new to this can easily create overwhelm and lead to complete paralysis. The goal of this book, is to cover music production from many different angles in a way that will change your thinking on the subject and build your confidence.
Music making is a very mental and psychological game, and more often than not, all the technical stuff can hold you back from achieving your goals if you don't have the right creative habits in place first.
With all the information available with a simple Google search, I wanted to really get to the heart of things that aren't being discussed nearly enough. I want to clear out all the garbage you may have been told and replace it with the essentials you can put to immediate use. Many people new to music may dive into forums and mindlessly watch video tutorials attempting to gather more and more information until they think they have enough to get going (hint: you never feel like you know enough).
That would be like reading a whole encyclopedia and then being asked to recall only the important things that will get you from point A to point B. Even worse, much of the information you get will contradict the last thing you read. It's like finding a needle in a haystack only to be told it's the wrong needle. There is a much better approach. It's an approach that doesn't require you to know a lot to get started. You only need to know enough to get to the next step in your process.
There is truly nothing stopping you from becoming a music producer. The ones who are successful now are the ones who started from nothing and chipped away at it until they found a way to express their unique voice. There are no gatekeepers making decisions on who is worthy and who isn't. The determining factor is you, your habits and your confidence in yourself.
This book can be read from start to finish, or as a “choose your own adventure”, going directly to what you think can help you most right now. Don't get caught up thinking you have to devour everything before getting started. That isn't necessary, and isn't the point of the book.
The core concepts in the book will come up time & time again which should help you retain them & be able to recall them when the need arrives. By exploring these concepts from several angles you should gain a broad view of their many uses.
My hope is that this book is used as a toolbox. You simply find the right tool that moves you forward and get back to work. So few people, who have more than enough information in their heads, ever start. Of those who do start, even fewer finish what they started and are satisfied with the results. I want you to be in that small group of finishers.

Whether you are a beginner or at an advanced stage of your music journey, this book is simply a must own. What is covered thoroughly in this book is how to approach the difficulties that a music producer can face and it goes in depth as to how you can change your way of thinking to overcome these obstacles; whether it be feeling uninspired, getting distracted with "life", and/or running into creative roadblocks when working within a DAW. This book even goes as far as teaching you about how the brain works and how to properly prepare yourself to be creative before you start a music project or even your music journey altogether which is what makes it a must own for those that are just starting their music project and are in the beginning stages of learning electronic music production. And as for experienced users, this book is definitely a great "refresher" tool to go back to and re-read. It is written in such a way that is easy for anyone to grasp and many of the lessons youll learn you can apply to other creative endeavors as well (even though it is mainly music production focused). I love that there are actual production "guide points" in the back of the book for quick reference tips on EQing, compression, mixing, etc. I HIGHLY recommend this book to add to your arsenal of music production related stuff!

How do you make something unique when the market is already flooded with books that promise you to become better at producing music? Simple. Focus less on the techniques behind a computer chair and far, far more on developing habits that extend far beyond music production. I think this book is selling itself short by its title; it's self-help for the digital age.
Before I came across Timothy's books, I constantly kicked myself for not understanding how I'd sit down to create something and instantly hit a creative brick wall. I thought that something must be wrong with me; that maybe I shouldn't be attempting to produce music and just find another hobby. But reading the words in this book AND applying the techniques have yielded nothing but positive results. I spend less time attempting to get my ideas down and the time I do spend is productive.
But you HAVE to apply the principles. Without them, the words in this book are just words and that's one thing I immensely respect in the way Jason Timothy chose to write this. It's not wordy at all; it's simple language. It's so easy to start breezing through chapters because he's talking to you, the reader, LIKE A PERSON. You won't find much technical jargon here, but you will find a ton of useful tools regardless.
Suffice it to say, this book deserves every bit of the five stars I'm giving as a rating.

This book will help you stop spinning your wheels and actually finish your productions, improve your production skills, and develop your own original sound. It will give you insight into how to make better use of the time you already spend on music and give you ideas for how to find even more time for it. It also has some great tips on the creative and technical aspects of production, including developing melodies, basses and rhythm, and EQ, mixing, compression, reverb, delay, filtering, etc. The author is a successful producer and also includes tips on getting noticed and getting signed to a label. I think that a wider audience of musicians and producers would benefit from the book, not just electronic musicians and DJs.

If you're a serial procrastinator who can never seem to finish anything, this book is for you.

The first time I finished a track was a couple of decades ago (remember Dance eJay?) and the second time was a couple of weeks after reading this book. All the time in between was spent dabbling in different DAWs, starting songs and then dropping them for various reasons, accumulating tons of plugins, watching countless hours of Youtube videos on how my DAW works, how to use compression, EQ & effects, mixing, mastering, tips'n'trick, switching DAWs again etc. etc. etc. but never getting around to actually consolidating all that knowledge in to a finished track that I could put out there and finally call myself a music producer.
This book firstly lays out why so many of us end up in this situation and then goes on to explain the psychology behind breaking those patterns while providing practical steps on how to develop new, productive habits. The song I finished isn't particularly amazing and I won't be releasing it, but it is finished and making that process a habit is what eventually leads to the bangers.
This book isn't just a good read - it can be an actual life-changer!

... rare gems that hits the mark so well in pretty much every area it touches
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 25, 2016Verified Purchase
This book is one of those rare gems that hits the mark so well in pretty much every area it touches. If you are a music producer this is simply a MUST buy. The reason is simple; Jason approaches the process of production from a very holistic perspective and draws on teachings from many different schools of thought - the main one being overcoming the gigantic battle with your biggest enemy - your MIND. His contrarian approach is also refreshing, and it is very obvious from reading that he really knows his stuff and has a deep understanding of the struggles and pitfalls of music production.
Choosing to avoid too much technicality but still having a deep foundation this book is an essential resource for any producer regardless of skill level or choice of equipment/DAW. I would not be exaggerating to say this this book can save you absolutely years of lost productivity just by applying a few simple rules and mastering your mindset. I cannot recommend it enough, a fantastic read.

Genuinely useful for music makers trapped in Loop Land
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 11, 2017Verified Purchase
This is a surprisingly good book. I thought I was the only one cursed with Loopitis - I get a creative burst, come up with the main loop of the tune and fail to escape and actually create finished arrangements and eventually move onto the next one. This book offers workable strategies and mindsets to get you moving on. I'm not cured yet but I'm making progress. I'm adding to my latest track, happy that I know it's probably a load of rubbish and repeating the mantra that it's OK to suck at producing and as long as you actually produce finished tracks you'll get better.
It's also about as good as any general self-help book if you're a procrastinator like me.

It's all in the mind and the habits
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 10, 2015Verified Purchase
I've got several of Jason's Ableton Live tutorial videos and sample packs, which are of a very high quality, as is the material here. It's written in a very informal style with short chapters, and I found it hard to read it in large chunks simply because I kept getting the inspiration to fire up Live quite often - so that is a positive point, not a negative! It deals with the underlying thoughts and habits that can get you properly into the game of music production, some of which is counter-intuitive (and why I haven't actually finished a track for far too long before this) and all of this is from Jason's first-hand experience. If you think you don't have enough time, or you need to read every manual, watch every tutorial video, make every track your best ever, and be a musical genius before you can get started, you need this book. Easy to read and very useful.
