The music of John Williams - 40 years of film music is a great set. With any greatest hits compilation there will be complaints of pieces that ought to be part of this compilation but are not. There will be several folks who will bring up the bleeding chunks argument that the bits and pieces do not do justice to a composer of John Williams's stature and that it does not do justice to showcase 40 years of film music by this composer. For me this set was a great one to get. I am not an ardent OST (original soundtrack collector, but I am very ardent Western Classical Music listener and concert goer. I know I've heard special tracks by John Williams, bought a few OSTs (Star Wars-Phantom Menace), but will not be getting all the individual OST of his films. So for me this set is great if not perfect. It captures on 4 discs, music from his best known films (till 2002).
The Indiana Jones and Star wars series is covered quite a bit since each part in the series of both film franchises gets a track or 2. This compilation is from 2003, hence there are no pieces from Indian Jones and the crystal skull (released 2008). Likewise for Star Wars and the revenge of the Sith (released 2005). Oddly no track from Star Wars - Return of the Jedi.
This set will no doubt need to be updated at some point to keep up to date with John Williams never ceasing creativity. Even today (in 2012), John Williams has released a great score for yet another Steven Spielberg film - 'War Horse'.
Since Spielberg cannot do with any other composer but John Williams for his films and since most of these collaborations were OST hits (as well as movie box office hits), most of the 4 CD compilation with the exception of the CD3 is mostly Williams-Spielberg collaborations. And then there is the Williams- Lucas collaboration in the Star Wars OSTs.
To be honest, the music of star wars and Harry Potter films is so amazingly innovative, that although they tried to do their best, the producers cannot do justice to the vast range of orchestral imagination that John Williams thought up. So I consider the representation on Star Wars and Harry Potter in this set to be a more of a sneak peek of the goods available. Star Wars with all 6 films seriously needs a separate compilation spanning 2 to 3 CDs at a minimum even if you pick a 'best of' collection. Likewise for Harry Potter series. And there are such sets out there but they are more like 1 CD compilations. You really need a 3 CD set for each of these two film franchises.
On the topic of some reviewers complaining that they were expecting the OST, well reading the "city of Prague philharmonic Orchestra" on the cover should give an indication. Some reviewers feel cheated that they did not get the OST track with smooth finish they expected. Well, on the CD it does not say it is the OST. These are concert performances and are not meant to exactly sound like they sounded on the film. They are not as polished in the mixing since that would have made this set lose the concert performance feeling, which is very different from what you want as a film score. Also the conductor has the liberty to change some nuances in the interpretation of a work which makes concert performances very interesting. I totally loved this CD and cannot wait for an update. I think 50 years from now there will be a 15 CD compilation of the best of john Williams with a lot more samples from each film covering most of his major film scores.

I was really anticipating this album. But after listening to the first CD (or trying to listen), it's just plain awful. I won't even attempt to listen to the rest of the set because it will make my speakers cry.
Half the instruments are out of tune and the brass is all over the place. The strings are out of sync, and the music is void of emotion. This would sound OK if you were in a drunken stupor. Don't get me wrong. It would be alright if the set cost $10 and you were using it as background fodder (like what most Christmas music usually is). But $40 for this trash? Come on. I wasn't expecting the world as I knew these weren't original recordings, but the orchestra sounds like they just arrived off the slow boat from Antarctica.
I guess I will give it away as a freebie to someone else who is deaf in one ear and doesn't know what a real instrument sounds like.
You're better off grabbing 4 $10 Williams albums than this insult to a great American composer.

He is John Williams, what can I say? Sweeping melodies, modest pauses, grandiose phrasing. All what the classic movie-theme buff would hope for. It make my heart soar in the same was a passage of Beethoven or Tchaikovsky would...only in a more modern sense.

I really enjoy this CD, the orchestra plays fantastic, the only one that dissapoint me is the close encounters of the third kind, i would've like to hear more about the diologue, that would have been great, but i like how the orchestra played it, anyway i really recommend you this product :)

My Mother loves this album. This album has all of her favorite songs, and she's an opera, orchestra music junkie. There's so much music, it keeps her entertained for long drives and calm during bad traffic. If she's happy, I'm happy.

I ordered this a long time ago. Kept asking where's my stuff? Replies apologized. Apparently it was sent (from UK), but was lost. No tracking was available in the states. The provider stood tall and sent a replacement at no cost. Had several nice short chats on line with their rep. This is a first class group. I won't hesitate to use them again. Thanks. oc.

Not a great recording.

I got this to accompany a ticket gift to a John Williams concert. I didn't look closely enough but these tracks are a mixture of recordings and they sound a little 'off'. Overall it's not terrible, but if you are familiar with William's scores and the London Philharmonic or Boston Pops recordings, these with jarr you a bit. Also the pacing of the scores on the 4 cd set is abit weird, they sort of peter out towards the end rather than being arranged with any style or flair.

Slightly Hit & Miss

Overall, this CD set is very good. You get all of John Williams early scores right up to his most recent " Catch Me If You Can".
There are, however some duds. The theme from Jaws is not good, which is a shame as it is one of the composers most famous scores. The City of Prauge Philharmonic just do not seem to have their hearts in playing this track. Worse is Raiders of the Lost Ark. It is played to quickly and if I'm honest, I've never really liked this music as it just comes across as boring. Indeed, the same theme is repeated throughout the score and I can't understand why so much play time was given to these themes.
The theme to Jurassic Park is just terrible. The orchestra seem out of time and again, this score is not one I like. I just think it boring. Maybe John Williams was having a bad day!
To be fair, the orchestra redeem themselves with the rest of the themes played on this album. For me, the best is disk three as this has all the classic scores Mr Williams wrote between 1966 and 1979. Outstanding tracks are The Fury; Dracula; The Towering Inferno; Jane Eyre.

All the main track you would want but not necessarily in the style you'd like

Don't misunderstand me many (possibly the majority) of the tracks are good, but even in the good tracks you get little flat disappointing moments; it's like having you're favourite meal in a restaurant and discovering that your favourite crispy bit was soggy, and then that it has a hair in it... OK the meal might generally be lovely but your favourite bit was spoiled and then there was something nasty in it that just doesn't belong.
Fine for musical wallpaper, serious listening, not so much, think Indiana Jones... but in a "fancy dress" outfit from ebay.
When you were a kid did your dad have a Mantovani plays Strauss or James Last DOES the classics.... well there you go

As one for whom music can make or mar even the best films, this CD comes along to remind us of the master himself. Favourite films they may be, but the score makes them legendary.

What a composer - every great film score is here, plus some I didn't realise Williams had written. A fantastic collection that will recall memorable scenes from favourite movies and a good quality recording that reveals detail in the orchestration that is only noticed when properly listening to the music rather than it 'simply' being an emotion modifying tool of Spielburg et al. And the CD is less than half the price of a lower quality download from iTunes!
